vehicle excise duty

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Sproggy4830, Jan 17, 2014.

  1. DVLA do what they are told, when they are told, and like every Government run department, mushroom management is rife.

So just get your V5s for your Pre-74 Built vehicles amended between now and April, using appropriate proof, to show the build date, in preparation for the good news, when we can all then submit our V5s to the DVLA, together with a form, and get them re-classed as Historic Vehicles.

  2. Surely the problem with that is as the DVLA say they have no knowledge of the impending change why would they agree to change my vans tax status. They were specific that they had no idea of this change

  3. They won't admit to knowing anything about this until they are specifically instructed by central government to implement the change. So right now it's "we know nothing about this" and then they'll get a letter (probably in the last 2 weeks of March) telling them to effect the change, and then suddenly they will know. They just behave like they live in a bubble and never read the motoring press.

  4. Thanks for that, so there really is no point in sending anything now. I suppose I will have to tax and then claim back when the change is effected.

    Yep, as said days ago
    ;):D;)

  6. Just got my V5C back after amending Type of Fuel from 'Heavy Oil' (!) to Petrol.
The Date of First Registration is given as 31 1 1973. Does this mean that I'll automatically be listed as Historic Vehicle when they are told about it, or do I still need to apply for a change to the V5?

I have been quiet on this since my original post . It would appear that even though some knowledgeable people have asked who appear to be the right people , the right questions .
I feel we are no further forwards than my first post . There appears to be no definitive answer / guide / Web page that we can confidently goto and say " ah so it's simply a matter of ...... "

    those who agree say "aye"

I don't know why anyone is worried about this.
Quite simply, it'll be announced when its announced.
It's not surprising, the DVLA are the square root of *****ing useless.

  10. The magistrate will side with the DVLA every time they see you as an inconvenience, how could an official in HM government get any thing wrong, that's impossible.
The only good thing about the DVLA is emm........... I can't think of anything, they are bureaucratic time wasters! Twice I've sent my licence off for points and they have lost it causing me to pay £20 for a new one (the £60 fine was bad enough) I've had V5's lost been mistakenly banned from driving (that took 6 weeks to sort out) They lost my private reg once and now someone else owns it. They are in Swansea, I could walk there in 30 mins and I know lots of local decent people that work there but they are a right royal pain, they should knock the building down lol. Rant over :)

Its not realy something i am worrying about , it more a mater of balance . The government dont seem to delay things when its a matter of taking cash from you .
For example if in the budget it is announced that , for example the cost of prescriptions are to go up, they normaly go up on the day of the budget , likewise with beer and fags . It clears is not happening so timely (if at all) when its a matter of giving something back
Wheres your pay rise the last 5 years , yet the balance is wrong where the politicions get around 20 percent a year

  14. Yesterday I received this by e-mail from the DVLA :-

Thank you for your email received on 5/3/14. Your email reference number is XXXXXXX.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer announced in his 2013 Budget speech an extension to the qualifying criteria for the Historic tax class.
With effect from 1 April 2014 the cut off date for VED exemption for classic vehicles of 1st January 1973 will be extended by one year to 1 January 1974.
Further details on how effected vehicles will be able to apply for a tax disc in the historic tax class from 1st April 2014 will be made available closer to the time. An amended Registration Certificate V5C with the updated tax class will be issued from DVLA following the licensing transaction.
A Refund of any months remaining on paid tax discs can be applied for using application form V14 which is available from www.gov.uk/dvlaforms

  15. And just to confirm that it isn't going to be automatic, and you will have to apply for free tax - my tax is due on the day this all changes over (April 1st) and today I got a tax renewal notice through the post: 12 months - £225.

  16. So, you send 'em a V14 not a V10?

  17. how much:eek:

  18. Why do you think I'm so keen to get my van switched over to historic status? The old style road tax (pre-2001) is set on a £5 per year escalator, so it automatically goes up every soddin' year! When I first got the van it was less than 200 for a year's road tax, and I've only had the van 6 years......

  19. It may end up automatic, remember the DVLA is full of IT these days, back in 1997 you couldn't apply online for VED or anything else.
