Undoing rear hub nuts?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by andybay, Jun 11, 2020.

  1. I need to disconnect my handbrake cable to do a repair on the chassis. I had a 3/4 breaker bar and a long scaffold pole on the 46mm hub nut, it wouldn’t budge. It started bending my 3/4 breaker bar! My impact gun wouldn’t touch it either.
    Any ideas anyone?

    Thanks
    Andy

  2. Worst case, give it a tickle with the grinder.

  5. Yeah i’ll cut it off if I have to but hoping not to resort to that

  6. I wish that was the issue

  7. Socket bar etc stand on it and get someone else to hit end of socket, whilst you are bouncing on bar ,works on the trucks !

  8. Do you need to take the hub nut off for the handbrake?..

I did but could have worked around it I think..

I was having bother but a bit of heat from a gas torch and an overnight of wd40.(.I know it's not penetrating oil but works for me) with a scaffold pole over the length of the breaker bar plus a half meter or so with 13st of me jumping on the end did it

Mine moved as the breaker bar started giving up.

I was able to belt the breaker bar back into shape with a big hammer on the "anvil" on my garage vice.

It did say DO NOT USE EXTENSIONS on it in big letters. Try heat, hitting it .. then careful with the angle grinder....

If you read the Muir book he suggests trying hitting it on the castellated nut with a big hammer and a cold chisel..like a big impact gun.

Very few cheap impact guns will have the welly to shift it. Mine just about does the nut up but cannot undo the nut it just tightened.

The handbrake cable comes out if you just undo the two M7 bolts and remove the brake drum.

Hahaha just remove the brake drum... it may well be very rusted on, youll need to get it off the shoes anyway, loosen adjusters fully and then you may also have to remove a rusty lip on the drum. If you find the right size metal bar you can poke it through the brake adjuster holes and tap on it against the drum.

  10. Just undo the 10mm bolts and the drum will come off on a late ??

  11. Thank you, I didn’t realise the drum comes off without removing the hub nut. I’ll give that a go then, should be easier than removing the hub nut.

  12. Thank you, I haven’t taken the wheel off yet so didn’t realise the drum will come off without removing the hub nut. I’ll try that.

  13. Slacken adjusters off through bottom of backplate,

Another option to undo the big nut ...if still required .
Take it to a tyre fitting company they will loosen it off with there mega powerful air guns ...nip back up and back to garage .

I drilled my hub nuts off.

If you start with a one mil in the centre if the castellation you simply go up a size over several iterations and then you can chisel it off.

A lot more control than a grinder and probably safer.

I’d dissembled the brakes as I was only changing the shoes before realising the back plates were shot.

  17. The drum will indeed come off without undoing the hub nut. Or may come off - sometimes (often) they put up a fight.

  18. Thank you all for your excellent advice. I took the drum off in the end leaving the hub nut undisturbed.

  19. I had this problem with my sisters Suzuki Jeep out in Dubai, the front hub nuts would not come off.
Now I'm not recommending this........ but I removed the split pins and took it for a drive up the road while heaving the steering from lock to lock.
It worked a treat after about half a mile they both came loose, and I had to walk home to get the socket wrench and a couple of split pins, just to get home safely!
