Tyre choice?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by ThreeTwo, Nov 16, 2020.

  1. Hi..sorry, I expect this has been discussed many times...

Just about to remove wheels and have powder coated - so decided to replace tyres too.

What do you guys run? Mine is a stock Westfalia Berlin on steels so 185R 14 tyres going on...

    Thanks

I went 185/75/14 (C rated) just for a little bit more clearance as mine’s lowered a bit. Speedo is now spot on.

  3. Just cheapo 50 quid a corner does it for me - not planning to set any speed records .
Make sure they quote and supply for 185R14C tyres . Idiots at some tyre places will try to fob you off with 185/70/14 , don`t fall for it as they`re for cars and not commercially rated (C) tyres - other owners will tell you different , yadda yadda yadda ...

Anything that’s adequately load rated will be fine. I tend to choose tyres based on what is on offer when I’m looking.

  6. If lowered, as long as it's rated within the plated axle load. Else, if not, just get what was originally fitted, as noted above.

And black, although mine do have some white on them.
Seriously, as long as they are load correct commercial ones, just about anything will do.
Tyres are rated on road noise...hands up who's ever heard their tyres. Fuel efficiency...on a Bay ?? And performance in rain, perhaps this is the only one which sort of matters.

  10. I currently have Maxxis MA-LAS which have been good. They have a decent tread for Mud & Snow without being too aggressive for motorway use.

Check for the 130mph speed rating you never know when you might need it :D

185R14C Michelin Agilas if you want a good robust touring tyre. Bit pricey but you pay for what you get. Comfortable ride, not noisy on motorways and good handling with a fully laden westy..........except roundabouts.

In the UK that matters a lot.

  15. Also if you unfortunately do crash
The insurance company will look at your tyres ,
    Worth bearing in mind ;)

  16. +1 for the Hankook Vantra’s
They transformed the ride quality on our van. Much less road noise also. ;)

I use Pirelli Carrier All Season 195/70 R15C 104/102R ‘Developed and engineered for commercial vehicles, this tyre is the right choice for drivers seeking an excellent handling, high mileage, a good rolling resistance and great performances in every weather conditions. In addition to this, Carrier™ All Season reaches a class leading position in terms of safety on wet road.’

That did sound rather like a direct paste of some advertising blurb, I was wondering where it was headed.
I just got some plain old Firestone Vanhawks half price of what was cheap already and have been surprised at just how good they’ve been, but I’ll save you all the sales spiel, not that I ever read it.

Mind you, some of that might be the coil-overs which make it quite fun on corners and roundabouts.

The problem for the majority (I suspect) on here, is that the tyres are likely to have age related defects long before the tread has reached the legal limit.

  20. I made sure mine was ZR rated over 150mph in case I fall off a cliff better to be safe than sorry
