Type 4 fuel injection issues - please help

  1. I'm in enfield north London but happy to get it transported somewhere to get fixed. I have a baby on the way and I'm getting shouted at for not getting on with the house rather than spending my head under the bonnet of a bus

I've changed the AFM, I have two, checked the spark and no issues, checked all hoses and vacuum. I've done all the checks on the temp sensor and still it won't idle.

If you rev it hard it runs great, although the odd puff of black smoke ( over fueling )

  2. Is there too much slack on the throttle cable, had something similar and just took the slack up on throttle and runs good (fingers crossed)

  3. I've adjusted the throttle and also the bypass bleed screw :(

  4. Could pull and tighten the throttle cable to keep the engine running.

  5. Only bother I had with head censer was it came lose started mint cold but very hard to start hot ran crap hot ran rich cos it wasn't sending the signal to the mass Afm, have you got the white wire on - side of coil? Are your injectors plugged on right ones if you get one Sid round the wrong way that dose it, I'd the elbow on cold start valve good they often split, are all the earths under left manifold on?

  6. The idle speed is set by the big flat head screw about the size of 5p piece in the throttle body. Try adjusting that to get it to idle.

  7. I've opened that all the way just before it comes out and it still won't idle

  8. Here is a thought, the sensor has a washer, it sits on top of the tip where as the hole isn't big enough for it to seat directly on the head. It's tight but I wonder if it's that sensative. It does seem to run rich all the time

When I got my van the PO had stripped the thread on the head sensor so it was lose. This lead to the engine running but extremely richly. I pulled the white wire from the sensor and grounded it to earth. It now takes a couple of turns of the key to get it started, idles poorly while cold but doesn't take long to warm up. .

You can't get the injector leads in the wrong order as they all fire together on every stroke. Have you checked what volume of fuel each injector is passing?

  10. No but when I rev it hard there is no Miss fire, runs well, just won't tick over and if you try and hold the throttle open a little just about idle it will run but quite ruff.

@sharpey - do you recon Mick would take a look at this one if it was delivered to him?

  13. Screwing the washer all the way out adds more air, try screwing it all the way in then slowly out a little bit out each time

  14. I've tried that lol

I'm thinking possible dodgy injectors or loom, when it's rough idling is it running on all 4cylinders ?

  16. Yes it's running on 4, I have a spare loom which I swapped and it's the same

  17. Tried to up load but too big, pm your e-mail and I try as a e-mail.

  18. Probably not an issue if you are sure its running on 4 but if its a 1979 california model it should have a one year one state only double relay the wrong relay may cause similar issues.
Best of luck with it anyway.:(
