Type 4 fuel injection issues - please help

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by The Little Camper Company, Mar 2, 2017.

  1. Been a while since I've been on as I've been busy building a brand new type 4 fuel injected engine, all parts are new or NOS ( please don't ask me how much I've spent :()

So now comes the problem of trying to get it to run, basically it will start, run for about 10 second ( on choke) and then die, if I rev it it's ok but doesn't run that sweetly when trying to hold an rpm.

I've check for air leaks, fuel pressure, timing etc etc and nothing seems to want to make it run

I have 2 ecu's and 2 AFM's and I have swappwd both out no difference

No interesting, when I uncrew the temp sensor on the head it will idle but very very rich, black smoke is visible and won't rev.

The only change I've made to the engine whilst building it was I put the metal temp sensor on cylinder number 2 rather than three. This was mainly due to tin ware as I bought some from the US which covered the hole for the sensor on cyl 3. I work in engineering and I thought that as it's sensor temp ( via resistance ) it wouldn't make a difference.

Now I haven't tried this yet as I'll have to strip down the fuel injection to get the left hand side tin off.

What are people thoughts? To add I've also changed the loom. The only second hand sensor I have is the air temp that sits under the plenum.

Please let me know what you guys\girls think before it's gets wheeled out into the road and left

    Cheers

  2. If it is wheeled out into the road please pm me the address :) in the mean time @davidoft is handy with them

  3. Unplug the temp sensor wire and ground it, the see if it will run.

After that it may be the injectors not firing as the cold start or 5th injector circuit runs for about 8 seconds so it may just be running off that.

Temp sensor being on cylinder 2 is fine. It's where mine is and it runs fine.

  4. Have you checked that everything is within spec and that all the wires are connected correctly? Make sure all the coil connections are firm.

  5. Yes I've checked all wires etc. I've also had all the injectors checked and cleaned. I assumed they were all firing as it will rev. I've checked the coil as I added the accu spark dizzy.

I thought the temp sensor was the issue but now my dreams have been shattered lol

  6. I am assuming it is L jetronic? Have to look at each part of the system unfortunately. The accuspark is it electro ic ignition? Does it have one of their dodgy rotor arms in it?

  7. dubsurftones put a link up yesturday for the complete workshop manual, worth a download

  8. TS2 wire?

  9. I've run the diagnostic on the relay for the fuel pump and check that works when it's suppose to. Out of intestest what settings do people run on the bypass screw on the throttle body and the AFM. Wasn't sure how many turns were needed as I can't get it to run long enough to fiddle with them

  10. Ts2 is the temp sensor in the head.

DO NOT TOUCH THE AFM SCREW

  11. The afm screw has been screwed and unscrewed so many times i need to get an idea of where is should be as a starting point

I will ground out the temp sensor. This is also new though

  12. ^^WHS

Do not mess with the AFM screw unless you have a gas analyser!

  13. There on some good articles on itenerant aircooled on AFM if you have messed with it already.

  14. Ok thanks but this surely will just adjust the mixture slightly, should stop the bus from idling?

Is the motor fitted in the bus?

If so, look behind the Air filter housing and see if the vacuum hose behind that has come adrift, ours ran very rough when it frayed away and came off.

  16. The Afm can really effect performance across the whole rev range so check everything else first. Check the s-boot for cracks and see whether the aux air regulator is open and that the l shaped boot on it is tight.

  17. Yes it's in the bus, if you watch the short video I took you can see it running with the metal temp sensor Unscrewed. Which vacuum hose are you describing?

  18. The
aux air valve is NOS, I tried clamping that and it wouldn't even fire.
