With reference to the list on ratwell, am I correct in thinking I need to fit the base shims on the left (with a smear of Curil T) and cast the head shims on the right into the nearest bin?

That might depend on previous rebuilds. If the heads or case have been decked all bets are off.

Ah, I should have said. New Brazilian Mahle pistons, new AMC heads

  4. Are the base shims sized based on calcs for your compression ratio or just to get a bit of deck height?.... some AMC heads have a step built in them to allow for that.

The heads have a step where the originals had a gasket so you shouldn't need the shims or the gaskets. The shims are designed to make up for for removing the gaskets from original heads.

As far as CR goes, if you're replacing dished with flat t0p, you need to do some calculating. Are the Mahles dished like the old ones?

You could always just put one of the shims in :D
