Type 1/Type 4 engines. Let's take a close look.

  1. Simple really. The two buses I've ever owned have had type 1 engines so I was wondering what the difference was between the two. I believe the type 4 (pancake engine) came in 1700,1800 and 2l and it also has a snail fan fitted to the heating some how but where there any other differences in the vans themselves? Are there different standard instruments on the dash? Different wiring looms? Whatever, please discuss.

  2. Nah... Pretty much identical :)

if the fan belt snaps on a type one and you drive it then it will cook, on a type 4 this does not happen therefore type 4 are superior end of thread lol

  6. I'm pretty sure in my mind that the type 4 is definitely an upgrade from the standard type 1 when brought from new. I'm really just curious about the differences in spec. I like the idea that the engine won't cook if the fan belt goes. Never knew that. Keep em coming

  7. Type 4 is more powerful, more torquey, more modern, more expensive.

  8. What makes the engines more powerful?

  9. For a start it's bigger!
I suspect the head design may be better, most came with twin carbs.
I'm sure @Paul Weeding can be more specific.

  10. Some also came with fuel injection which makes for smoother running.

  11. More cc's is always a good thing. Would like a type 4 in mine one day but as I've just put in a new type 1 I'd better get the use out of this one first. Is any thing different up from in the drivers seat?

automatic gearbox became an option with type 4 engines, i don't think the dash changed specifically to each engine.

  13. My 2.1 makes 130hp and doesn't leak oil.
Nope nothing, the only thing is the aux fan switch fitted to the heater levers but you can't see that.

  14. No replacement for cubic displacement. ;)

Can anyone tell me what happened to the type 2 and type 3 engines????

And more importantly, what oil did they use? :)

Everything about a T4 engine is chunkier and stronger, but that doesn't make the humble T1 engine completely hopeless. I always had T4 engines until this last bus and TBH getting it in and out and working on it is so much easier, quicker and cheaper. Next up crank balancing, new cam, new bigger valve heads with 3 angle valve job, DRLA 40's etc all for about £1000-1200. Much cheaper all round than messing with a T4 engine.

  17. I was sticking to the op's question... Other than the engine and box, are there any major differences between a type 1 and a type 4 powered van.. Which there isn't!! :)

The only real difference is the engine access hatch...

If your stock mechanical fuel pump fails (diaphram) on type4 a fuel wont get mixed with an oil which usualy saves your engine :)
