Sandwich was also the main port of entry into the UK for VW vehicles back in the 60's and 70's . A small port just big enough for a ship load of cars, quite close to the Rhine. You will see that on your M plate - mine certainly indicates Sandwich. My mum would point out the cars parked at the port when we lived in Broadstairs. I would guess that the place name is actually Sand Wick or a sandy wide beach suitable for landing flat-bottomed Viking or Saxon trading ships on it. Pegwell Bay just to the north was where St Augustine (not of Hippo) is said to have arrived to re-convert the south of England, and there is a re-created viking longship on display there too. Later on this beach was the location of the Hoverspeed terminal for the SRN4 cross channel hovercraft service to Calais.
