Kebabs have a long and august history, starting in the Middle East where initially they were simply grilled meat heavily seasoned. There are two particular varieties which those of us in the West are particularly familiar, being shish kebab and doner kebab.

Shish kebab is far and away the more commonly known term and refers to a variety that is popular in Asia. Most commonly made of lamb or beef, it has also been known to contain swordfish or chicken. While we usually see these dishes prepared with the vegetables and meat on the same skewer, they were initially done separately.

The doner kebab, on the other hand, is most commonly known as the source of the meat for gyros. Essentially it’s layers of meat stacked into an inverted cone and slowly roasted by turning next to a vertical cooking element. The outer layer is slowly sliced as it cooks and served, most commonly in a pita as the famous gyro.

Other varieties you might find are Kebab Kenjeh, Kebab Halabi, Burrah, Kalmi, and Galouti.

  3. never eaten one from a kebab shop or stall but have made them at home on BBQ days and enjoyed them.
But I think the best were in a fantastic little taverna in Vamos Crete. Owner Georgio had a drink and called "Yamass" every time he turned them, we were all pretty sloshed at the end of the night but satisfied and happy
    :"Yamaas" Georgio

  7. Having conducted extensive research i can categorically confirm Turkish kebabs are FAR superior to the Greek Giros....

In Turkey the pitta is binned in favour of a Yarim ekmek - (half bread = half a loaf ! ) - if that doesn't fill you nothing will !!

Any kind of kebab or just a Doner? I have to say, though I don’t partake of them these days, I have in the past and they can be very tasty, delicious even,..........there, I’ve said it, deal with it :D.

Best kebabs we’ve had have been the chicken ones from Lahore Cafe in sunny Bradford but not been there for a good while either. Bit spicy mind

  12. The takeaway in the village was reccomended by a bunch of Indian blokes I used to work with & their large doner consists of a naan, freshly made on the premises, salad, doner meat & mint raita. It weighs in at a full healthy kilo and they will actually deliver them to your home! I do like to indulge in one from time to time, but have had to pause temporarily since their hygene rating plunged to a slightly disturbing one star, following an outbreak of the rancid botulisms. The pile of kitchen equipment, tiles & broken cupboards heaped up outside the shop tends to suggest that they are currently engaged in rectifying the situation.

Christ... I boycotted the local cafe when they where awarded 3 stars. And that was a proper Marmiteole. I wonder how bad it was to get one star!

I think I’ve eaten a doner kebab once in my life and that was more than enough! I used to see my Turkish neighbours Chuck their doner in the back of their car Before heading to their takeaway!

as my body is now a meat free temple I like veggie on a stick kebabs. I did used to eat steak kebabs in Spain :)
