I find it unbelievable that folks will spend £50k plus on a car to save a couple of hundreds worth of road tax , and I know a few folks who have too
The Treasury is getting hard up, so they should introduce road tax charges for electric vehicles, which after all are mostly owned or leased by companies or rich people, both can afford to pay road tax.
My FIL has an electric car. When he hooks up to any free chargers at the shop the current is so low it doesn't even cover his journey home. Still it ticks the green box even if it's practically useless as a charger
Remember when Diesel cars had big tax advantages. EV owners will soon get to the point where the electricity bill is only 20-30% of the pay-by- the mile cost as tracked by vehicle telematics systems. And you will have to find working chargers . When there are enough EVs to be worth bothering with they will be taxed sufficiently to make up the shortfall in tax on fuel. "There aint no such thing as a free lunch"
Though probably gas or coal generated electricity I wouldn't be surprised ... Home charging with renewables the way to go for us, but then we have a parking space that many don't. They shouldn't have included road tax in the "incentivisation" of EVs in the first place. Exemption from ULEZ and congestion charge more appropriate. We're taxed on ours just because it has a back up "range extender" petrol generator. Fine by me. We're using the roads just like everyone else.
I've just bought an old 944 that turned 40 last month so you can pretty much guarantee that the nil tax band for historic vehicles will disappear soon.....
I got one purely because my need to glide silently upon the silken highways of our fair isle is significantly more important than those of the classes below me, upon which I cast my scorn. It has nothing to do with smugness, thank you very much. (Plus, the company car tax means a decent spec, 300bhp, rear wheel drive beemer costs £90 a month less than a boggo spec, 1.2l Vauxhall Adam, a-thankyou!)
Be interesting to see what happens to solar installations this week, how much they have managed to produce. A wood burner powered 5-10kw steam turbine power plant may be needed to tide you over charging in winter..
