I'll take a few pics of the yellow one later which is waiting to be picked up. Off the road for 3-4 years in all it sailed through it's MOT with just a wiggle of one brake light bulb and adjusting the headlight aim.

    2 down, one to go.
    Meanwhile...
Now this 'ere Devon is going to be my van, I removed the poptop lift up bit with canvas and then this bit...

...and some gash bits of rusty crap Devon fitted, perhaps as a nod to supporting the bunks?

...repaired the hole on the tin roof at one corner.

Then removed the loose paint and rust and treated right round the roof hole.

But that's not to say that beforehand it got it's horn fixed, the cut wiring under the van sorted, a new cargo wood floor and lino, propex and fridge refitted, a new indicator relay, new hinges and clips for the poptop, engine flushed with petrol*, driven 3 times round the car park with the brakes on, carb linkage improved, carbs set up and balanced, full service...

    * after having the ignition on for a few minutes checking the lights (the fuel pump ran too), the next morning I found 1 gallon or 2 of petrol had flowed through and filled the engine overnight, then overflowed somewhere leaving a huge puddle on the floor too. So now it has an ignition operated cut-off valve and 2 relays fitted in a similar way to FI buses, so that the fuel pump works only when either the starter is turning or the alternator is charging. Had to be done so I can 100% say that won't happen again.

Even after a week with it's drain plug and filler removed, when I started it a cupful of fuel/oil spat out of the exhaust so I didn't let it warm right up, let it rest and repeated a few times until it was clear-ish. Then ran it up properly. There was quite a bit of popping from the exhaust as the petrol burnt off, but later the same day it sailed through it's emissions test.

It's been a while since I last looked at it so today I had a dust inside - stage one clean-up. Tomorrow it'll get pushed outside and blown with an air line and dusted more and more...and more...
The paint inside is pretty good where there is paint, I think I'm going to leave most and blow in the bits than need it. It'll be protected and most is covered up by furniture anyway.

do you have a realistic date in your head for the completion (to a driveable standard) of the van? i'm guessing you'll use it as a daily once the thing starts and drives and fettle the interior etc over winter - or have we seen the last of you for this year meeting wise?

All done and dusted including MOT and interior in 3-4 weeks. These are going to be long weeks, I'd guess I need to put in 80-100 hour weeks to get it done, but it depends on how fussy I get with the prep. I'm aiming not to be too fussy about a few lumps and bumps but then it's hard to leave bits that aren't quite right.:D

Yesterday I prepped and painted the bottom bit of the poptop...

...and the bumpers... wet on wet to get it done quick, not too bad a result.

Today it was the turn of the doors, but these just got high build primer on the outside for now.

I should have done the engine lid too, but I was running out of space as had these to do for the yellow one.

  16. Wonderful. Next week I'm going to be trying for my first MOT in three years on my Devon, after replacing sills, arches and all sorts, learning as I went along. Nowhere near your standard of finish, but solid and with rust removed in the right places. I was amazed at the restoration done on the van years ago - every time they neatly welded a repair panel over the rusty one and then filled, sanded and painted.
I bought a really nice VW front arch, by the way, which didn't have that extra Brazilian bit. And also didn't fit perfectly...

The step needs adjustment as Brazil bays have a higher cab floor. Once adjusted they fit well IME and I've fitted dozens...

  18. And beautifully done. I modifies the step bit, but mine was twisted quite a lot, so difficult to get front and back lined up. Or maybe it's my old van that was the problem...
