There is nothing wrong with jacking your van up on the jacking point using the jack supplied if you are on solid level ground. The trouble is it is quite unstable and jacking points are prone to rot. If they are rotted I would jack the van with a trolley jack placed beneath the rear torsion beam for the rear and beneath the chassis V point for the front .

If the jacking points are rusted through then they should be repaired or replaced asap.

  4. On the same subject(jacking points), i had the lower 300mm of bus replaced and a lot more , those "jack entry points" looked a bit suspect to me insomuch it seemed to me ,left as they come fitted they are water/rot traps , so pumped them full off grease, good idea? what say you peeps?> waste of grease £4.59 a tube !!!

I would say grease in itself can be a water trap but if its filled with grease it won't get in. Having said that I vaguely remember jacking point blanks were sold for a while, but I am going back a bit!

  7. If like us, you rely on a garage to do work on your bus make sure that it is one you can trust, get a personal recommendation if you can, make sure they can be contacted in different ways (relying on one number is a bit dodgy) and if you book work in you come to an understanding if what you want done, what actually needs doing and an agreement that major work/changes to the original plan will be OKed with you before extra work commences.

It sounds obvious, but when someone has difficulties with a garage its usually down to lack of communication.

  8. Yeah poptop i"d heard of those blanks you speak off but couldn"t source any so i got 4 of them rubber door stops and fitted them to j.p. entrance> Zed, i dont brake like that cos my brakes are out of adj. it"s to ensure (4 me/my driving anyhow) my brakes are holding ,not overheating , unlikely in a bus from 50mph but chances i wont take>i had occassion to do a "controlled" stop recently, hell ! then i realised only to well why some guys lay out for total disc conversion.(leave space in front to brake and some muppet will simply cut in suddenly and stand on their brakes!

Buy spares to carry even if you cant fit them yourselves the AA or garage might and they will not have them in stock.

Also what i do is fit the new parts and then keep the old if ok for the spares.
That way you know the new parts fit
You should be less lightly to break down in the first place as you have the new parts fitted
You know the old parts work so can be useful for diagnosing a problem

    Tyres

Your VW type 2 bay came with standard wheels they also came from the factory with commercial rated tyre's because they are a heavy vehicle. VW recommend commercial tyre's so too do all converters and insurers.

If you have stock 185/C/14 tyre's fitted, 28 psi front, 36 psi rear with 3/4 load, or 41 psi fully loaded.

people add 3psi for longer journeys and heavier loading.

All VW type 2a/b campers came from the factory on semperit tyres.

You may have after market wheels and tyre's, it would be advisable to check the load rating and recommended tyre pressure's as some owners simply have the cheapest tyre's fitted which do not always match the vans weight.

you will get better wear and mpg from correctly rated and fitted tyre's even with after market wheels.

If you have a nice driveway, pop a piece of ply under your engine to catch the oil.

if you have no oil on the drive or the wood then the engine oil needs topping up.

When you're doing an oil change, make sure you replace the sump plug before re-filling.... (Yes, twice!)

  18. A perfect guide to happy free motoring,
dont try to break land speed records in your bus by trying to go 70 mph+ every where cos your engine will break.. as many have found out, 2.5 litres of oil and air dont cool as quick as 5 litres,

  19. I just wanted to say thank you so much for all of the useful bits and pieces of information that has been put on this thread! Not only am I a newbie to campervans but I am a girl with no mechanical knowledge so this is really useful!! Nothing is too basic for me as it's all new and I expect there are a lot more newbies out there that appreciate the help too :D
