  1. Hey guys, my first thread on here. Thought best show my kombi.......when I can figure out how to get pics on here that is, before i ask 2,683 questions. Currently in the middle of a conversion and a multitude of repairs. Done so far, 2 chassis rails, 2 out riggers, half a floor, pillar repair and a bulkhead repair. Currently working on heater system replacement and custom interior fitting at the moment. Still got a few electrical gremlins to correct/modify, full sound system to install, cushions, door cards, quaternary windows to install and paint to go.

Sounds like you're having fun already..
We'll hopefully be able to help you along and advise accordingly.
By the way Scooby engines are best on 5w-30w according to @Sick Boy usual halfords anti-freeze.

  5. Yes - Halfords told me to use the pink stuff but Fellows Speed insisted I use the blue so that's what I use.

  6. Keeping engine stock, I personally find that the original engines are more than reliable enough if you maintain them. I have had one breakdown, stopped me for all of 15 minutes and cost 50 pound to repair, done many miles since. I generally find it's people modifying without good knowledge/ research first

Bizarre, they told me pink @Sick Boy!

  8. Maybe I should check then. Any idea what is the difference?

  9. Welcome aboard the roller coaster..

  11. Doug Just been onto Perry to ask for clarification. He says they used to recommend Pink but now recommend Blue as there is a bit of seepage with Pink. Halfords say it should be Pink.

Hmmm, I'll have a look into it.
I seem to remember its more that 1 of them has something in it that aluminium cases don't like.
    Watch this space.......

  14. Perry seemed to be saying that as we have aluminium cases it doesn't really matter that much. Would be good to get some definitive information.

You seem to be concentrating on the colour rather than the type, which coolant does Subaru recommend?
There are three types of antifreeze commonly available.
    Inorganic Acid Technology (IAT)
IAT is typically used in cars manufactured up to the mid ‘90s it contains silicates and phosphate corrosion inhibitors.
    Organic Acid Technology (OAT)
OAT does not contain silicates or phosphates and different manufacturers use different additives to reduce corrosion. OAT coolant is typically used in new cars and may or may not be compatible with older engines.
    Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT)
HOAT coolants have added silicates, which increase the aluminium protection.
I use 4-life coolant in the all-aluminium V8 in my MGB and unless Subaru recommend otherwise I’d use 4-life or Evans – both are synthetic, waterless coolants with very high boiling points and long life.

  20. Thanks - that's a very useful post.
