A quick update of todays work on Bolly, as you may recall when i got her there were a fair few areas of red oxide primer covering up the faded paintwork, here is a reminder which also shows how flat the paint was as i took this photo whilst cutting the paint back. I had a can of spray made to cover it and did a video of the procedure (click the link on my signature) the paint however was too light, and although it looked better than primer i was never happy, also i thought it would be wise to cover a large area rather than just the primer parts which i later regretted, here is a pic showing the large area painted. Today i washed and waxed her but i decided first to remove as much of the paint as i could to just leave the primer covered, i set to with 800 wet and dry and then polished it afterwards. The reason i originally covered more than this was to firstly hope it blended in and secondly to hide the patina which is why i belive the original owner primered it! i'm toying with leaving the bits where the paint is thin like these pictures what do you all think about that idea?. The other side was originally primered by the fuel cap and rear light, it now has been cut back as much as i dare. This is how it was. Here is a picture of her finished and polished. i'm still toying with the idea of getting the paint scanned to get an exact match as i don't think a total respray is a good idea, i'm a beliver in having original and although the paint is rough in parts i think a respray is for when i need a resto in a few years, also as this year was all about buying her i want to spend money on using her for the next few years, i've hardly used her this year due to finances but i always knew that would be the case.
I think your bus looks great as it is. Full of character but obviously very well cared for. Use and enjoy. Once painted you start to worry about all sorts of other things. Parking etc. And they still show signs of rust anyway.
Thanks, i think i agree vinnyboy, if i spent a fortune on a proper paint job i would worry too much, as you rightly point out the van has "character" (for character read a few dents colour blemishes and scratches......) however this does allow me to not worry too much about it if i park it anywhere, i always said when i got her that it would be a "twenty foot bus" and that is the case, parked on it's own it is what it is and from twenty foot away it looks A1 but close up you could pick plenty of faults.....however i guess to make it A1 would cost at least 6 grand and then it wouldn't be worth as much (gross) as it is at the moment, that phrase sounds daft but basically what it means is that as it stands i would easily get 14 grand for it but if i spent 6 grand would it be worth 20? i doubt it, therefore it's worth more as it is. As you point out it is well cared for it's mad but i love my van and it's just metal but i do love it.
