Wicked opening ceremony, glad to see the refugee team.

Seriously non plussed by the Russian team being there, though can accept some are clean and it's harsh....however how many athletes were denied a high point in their career by some cheating so and so from there?

I love the Olympics :) it takes a bit of time to get really into watching it tho. We had tickets for women's footy and boxing at London Olympics and I also went to men's hockey as my dad dipped last minute as he was worried about falling on the grandstand steps.

It was a fab atmosphere and I loved the fact that despite there are/were so many conflicts around the world all the supporters of different nations came together.

I find it all a truly awe inspiring experience, equally so for the Paralympics. I liked it that although you want your own country to win you still support other people too.

Olympic Refugee Team Urges Compassion for Displaced People

But they have (indirectly ) displaced the people of Rio who were forced out of their homes for this money making commercial bag of lies.

It lost its meaning many years ago.

    WTF are you on about?

Name a sport that doesn't have a commercial aspect....

To get participation you need to fund grassroots, to do that you need budget for organisers, kit, facilities. To get budget you either need paying spectators and/or sponsorship in the upper echelons. To get that you need a commercial aspect - or your sport dies.

Don't model Soccer over most sports - the disjoint between the premiership and what is below is misleading, there are thousands of volunteers putting in time and effort on fields all across the world, even in that the most pompous ass of sports.

I agree that some of the commercial aspect is distasteful, but don't taint the whole event due to that - the HUGE majority of people have worked their arses off to get there.

As for the Rio residents that lost their homes - I don't know if that is fact, do you? And the other issues that are drawing protests, they are significant I agree, but existed before these games and will exist long afterwards - i.e. Brazil is mooted as an economic powerhouse yet sustains awful living standards for a lot of its population - that's up to the Brazilians to tackle surely?

Ok - I researched it - you have a valid point about people being displaced, but it appears they were compensated - agree money is not the same as a community lost.

I guess it's a choice, either it goes to only the richest of countries, or has to cause some casualties.

  15. I SEEN LAST NIGHT ON THE NEWS THAT AN Olympic RUNNER FROM GB MADE IT TO RIO, BUT HIS COACH WHO TRAINS HIS YOUNG PEOPLE , HAD NO MONEY IE SKINT AND NO PASSPORT TO GO TO RIO , SO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY STEPPED IN AND DONE A FUND RAISER AS A THANK YOU FOR HIS HARD WORK OVER 25 YEARS COACHING FOR FREE , GOOD ON HIM

I disagree with it in the same way I disagree with giving aid to India, which has a space programme but Marmite on its own poeple. Why should the world give when the corrupted governments are not helping their poorest. Please don't say it's the same in the uk or any other western country as we all know that it's only a handful that live as poorly as those in the 'developing 'world.

Open water swimmer’s Olympic preparation complete after final faeces eating session

Swimmers taking part in open water events at the Rio Olympics have concluded their training by gorging on mouthfuls of human faeces.

The World Health Organisation has advised swimmers “wrap their bodies in at least five layers of clingfilm” and to “keep everything shut”, though many competitors have tried to acclimatise to the conditions they will face in Rio.

“One mouthful of that Marmite and you’re a goner,” said WHO spokesperson Simon Williams.

“It’s dirtier than Jimmy Savile’s DVD collection in there.”

However, one British athlete believes he has an advantage on the opposition. For the past six months, open water swimmer Barry Smith has been eating his own excrement.

“Some people make a face when I tell them what I’m doing to get ready for Rio,” said Barry.

“But you don’t become a top athlete without dedication. When everyone else is throwing up, for me, it’ll be like swimming in milk and honey.”

But that wasn’t enough for Barry.

“I’d been eating my own faeces for months when someone pointed out to me, ‘of course you’re gonna like your own Marmite, it’s other people’s you’ve got to worry about’.

“So since then I’ve been eating exotic turds from all over the world. It’s amazing what you can buy on the Internet these days.

“I just hope they don’t eat anything too spicy in Brazil. Those are the ones that give me a bit of a funny tummy.”

Brazil takes gold medal in Olympic Riot Control event

Brazil has taken the first gold of the 2016 Olympics with what judges described as an ‘impressively aggressive’ display in the Freestyle Riot Control event.

Scoring straight 6.0s across the board from an international panel, the Brazilian team crushed their opposition in the opening event with a display of baton work that clearly took anti-Games protesters by surprise.

Scattering the rag-tag team of barrio and favela dwellers who had defied the odds to meet them in the final was a mere formality for the highly-trained team of professional athletes Brazil had picked to represent them.

With the field already almost cleared by the first team, Brazil then brought on their substitutes for the shooting section where they scored a remarkable succession of direct hits with both rubber bullets and tear gas canisters.

“With a team spirit and a pushy attitude like that, coupled with first-class equipment and training facilities, it’s no surprises that the Brazilian team lead the world in cracking heads and tearing aside shoddy, hastily-constructed barricades,” said Newsthump’s Olympic correspondent, Simon Williams.

“Brazil really shocked their opponents with a coordinated display of ruthless teamwork which sends a message to the world; Brazil are not to be trifled with in this event.

“Yes, they weren’t facing world-class opposition, but I think only practised and professional teams such as those fielded by France, Russia and the USA would have stood a chance against them. A gold medal richly deserved.”

Brazil plans a replay against protesters tomorrow night, when the world’s attention will be distracted by the opening ceremony – and fans are already predicting it will be a rematch to remember.

Great, that tool Clive 'won it practically on my own' Woodward is commenting on the women's 7's....something he knows pretty much nothing about to the extent of getting their names wrong.
