The Horror...

  1. My bus is with the restorer to have a new rear valance fitted plus a few bits and pieces fettled here and there.

He let me know today that it wasn't just the outer valance that needed some work. He's fabricated an inner valance, but here are some pictures to show quite how bad things have got down there...

Oh dear. That's the chassis isn't it?

And here's where we are as of lunchtime today.

I'm tempted to pop round as I wanted to sand and paint the exhaust and it's never going to be as easy to get to as it is now.

Still, despite the surprises, it's in good hands and I know he'll do a good job.

Year One: new electrics, interior and upholstery
    Year Two: new gearbox
    Year Three: rear bodywork

Maybe next year is the one where I don't have to shell out four figures on it.

  2. Dont worry they always look bad when things are cut away! Forget painting the exhaust box they always rot from the inside out. Spray some Metal Ready Rust Remover on it and wash it off with water - puts a nice coat of zinc on it - got mine through winter

  3. A few on here have suggested stove paint. I guess I'd just like it to look nice, rather than a used Pampers wipe.

  4. I used wood burning stove paint to tidy up my exhaust

  5. Looks exactly the same as mine. D posts completely shot.

  6. Im sorry i cant bite my tongue any longer

Dude that needs an entire inner valance and more besides
If its been opened up that much its worth fixing properly

Take a look at my resto thread and see what pauls had to do for a proper job

  7. They do rot from the inside out but only when infrequently used
Metal ready isnt rated for exhaust temps and the last thing you want on anything that gets proper hot is zinc
Id leave the exhaust for now dude and save your funds for essential works

    Well said Para,

I'm not sure what that attempt of a repair is going to join to, that needs alot more cutting out, and alot more work to the rear of of the chassis legs before, redoing the bottom of the posts, and then lastly the valance.

Im all about honesty and most of the time because im so honest i upset people

  10. the time spent doing that you would have replaced anew one in half the time , painting the new one s inside first of course ,then when its out u can repair surrounding ares too , doing cut corners now , it will bite ye in the arse , owen nw

  11. I agree thats not the best way to do that:( it should be a full rear valance as that repear has just been welded on rotton metalo_O that wont last very long before it rusts again, sorry to say ;)

  12. Them repairs are shocking!! Why s he even bothered plating that rear valance I don't know? Unless its was down to you to supply the panels and your trying to do it cheaply? Which ends up taking x2 as long and you end up with a crap job! If the guy who s doing did this off his own back I'd be taking camper straight off him!
