The Alps and camper storage

Discussion in 'France' started by ChrisOffler, Jun 2, 2022.

  1. We're heading to France, Switzerland and Italy this summer and are planning on hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc!

Does anyone have any experience of driving their camper through the alps (We're a '76 Bay) + Does anyone know the best way to store for 11-14 days whilst we're out hiking? We're going to be starting from the Chamonix area, but it seems remarkably hard to find storage solutions.

  2. Have a look for Switzerland for English speakers. A very useful site

Much of my driving is in the Alps and I’ve never had a problem. What engine do you have in your '76 Bay? A type 1 might struggle in some places.

I expect it will be near impossible to find secure storage anywhere near Chamonix. You could try the local campsites but space is at a premium in the summer

Used to do that run regularly in my bay back in the early 80’s before the tunnel. It was a much newer bay and I loved the twists and turns. Parking shouldn’t be a problem look for long term parking at your starting point and explain your needs!

  5. You could contact the tourist office in Chamonix or chalet companies Like Bigfoot if their still in business.
Perhaps try some of the other villages along the valley like Les Houches

  6. Great, thanks for all of the responses everyone!

Will get in touch with the tourist office in Chamonix, that's a great shout.

77 Westy - We have a type 2 engine, so should be ok... She's coped with everything we have thrown at her so far, and we're not going to be in any rush, so should be ok!

    It’s either a Type 1 (1600) or Type 4 (2.0l) engine. I’ll guess Type 4, you’ll be fine.

  8. It seems I can't after all these years, use a keyboard...

    Type 1 engine...

It’ll still be fine, just slower. A lot slower. :)

  10. I know nothing about camper storage in the alps, but how about trying one of the campsites in the Chamonix area, undoubtedly cost but might be safest. I cant remember the one we used to use when I used to go summer mountaineering. Enjoy the Tour Du Mont Blanc, I did that on a guided mountain bike holiday some 18 years ago. long climbs and descents and great scenery
