Attempted and failed yet again to clean the black mildew staining off the poptop bellows.
Bought a pair of used HX's from ebay, one has started blowing, the other has rust holes in the skin. I don't have the facilities to fix them nowadays which is a shame as they are originals with the proper fins.

  5. I remember a guy I met back in the 90s who wrapped his HXs in strips of fire blanket that had been soaked in high temp paint, left to dry then over painted again. Said he'd been doing it for years on every vw he'd owned.

Don't chuck em. I'd have them to put in my "refurb at a later date" pile. I did mine and have another set in the middle of being done.

Heh-Heh, yes I was hoping to get a token payment for them. Every little helps. :)

No idea when the spare set I've got will reach the top of my to-do list, so I'll have to pass. Just didn't want to see such a rare beast(s) get binned.

Nor me and if I had a garage and a mig welder I'd fix 'em (for a second time). I'm quite disappointed how little time the skins lasted. I destroyed a pair of aftermarket ones for those! Ate the surface rust with acid, painted inside and out. Replaced the end plates on both and an inch of exhaust on one. They are also a bit thin on the head end so maybe, thinking about it, the best place for them is the bin now. :(

It does sound like they've had a couple of lives already. I've been lucky on both my sets that the exhaust part is solid and all original fins good.

Indeed, they were a bit "thin" to start with I guess. Shame you can't transfer the fins to a new pair.

A bit of new metal where a hole used to be, and two new handbrake cables.
*obvs not actually done by me, just ‘driven to’ and ‘paid for’. Definitely better than the gaffer tape repair I’ve been used to :D

Noooo, I'm practicing the art of patience on that one ;)
.....Just getting things sorted for MOT - although the hole in the exhaust silencer might mean I need to fit the new Quiet Pack sooner rather than later too.
If we were just fitting the carbs, it would be sorted by now - but in an effort to tie everything together in one 'engine out', we're doing new oil cooler / fan shroud, thermostat / rods, powder coating tinware, painting engine bay, and fitting carbs all together. Takes a bit more planning and time. And possibly replacing the O/S sill whilst it's there. It'll be fine.

  20. Get yourself some dynax s50 and make use of those nicely bunged up holes
Your sills will thank you for it.
