  1. Scraping the whole lot out just increases the opportunity for more rotting.

And seam sealant like POR-15 or any other coating is superb for tracking rust and water along underneath it if there was a rusty edge or a crack to start from.
The wax idea is better. Or getting rid of the massively thick paint job resulting from too many resprays.

  6. The panels slightly twist and move mike so any paint work done in the seams without seam sealer will crack
Vw originally used seam sealer it just wasn’t the same as modern polyurethane sealant
So after 40 years or so it shrinks and cracks allowing water in.

If the jobs done properly it will last for years to come

So the hot air gun? Is this for removing paint, loosening old VW seal, or as I suspect to dry out your crack  to prep for the wax?

    I guess the last?

Day 5 of refreshing the engine bay:
Scraper & brush in hand...meticulous & methodical. It’s like a palaeontologists dig...except i’m quite sure to not discover the decayed remains of a Velociraptor - only yet more rust & repairs than imagined.

Ok, so it’s mostly frantic-manic scraping - might be time to break out the power tools.

Nothing. Been far too busy trying to stay alive, working in this hear!

  11. Have you pulled out the rear hatch seal and had a look in the corners of the seal channel yet?

But once the rust gets under any seam sealer regardless of age, it will come back unless it is totally removed back to bare metal.

  13. Yes...but it’s too ugly to frighten the good folk on this thread
Just uploaded images to my Engine Bay Refresh discussion.
    Cheers dude.

  15. Still got wheel arches and sills to paint, and load floor to wax. Belly pan on, then I’ll never have to look at the underside of the blasted thing ever again. I’ll do a write up.

Will give my pressure bleeder a work out tomorrow.

  16. Still pootling around Southern Brittany, getting lots of attention from the locals. Mostly bemused Frogs trying to comprehend why a hippy bus is riding Porsche Fuchs. Not seen many other T2s out here so far.

Oh and some bar steward (*pun) stole my Hogs Back Brewery TEA bar mat off the kitchen worktop while parked up in the campsite!

Changed the horrible LED strip light for a nicer looking light to match the reading lights by the bed. Faffed around for an eternity measuring it all up as I didn’t want to drill any more holes, so opted to use old ones already there from the bunk hangers and old strip light. Balanced it up with a couple of coat hooks for when I’m camping.
It runs off the starter battery rather than the leisure one, so it’s not like I’m even going to use it much, but hey, it looks nicer :)

  18. Read the above when I got home tonight which caused my bum to twitch a bit as it's an area I've not checked on my unrestored, slightly crusty 73 for at least a decade and when she was laid up in the council lock-up, untouched for 8 years her rump was exposed to quite a bit of damp. So I've had a quick check and fortunately all is good. Just treating the little bit of surface rust right now. So thanks for the heads up on this one, wouldn't have thought to look otherwise
