  1. So frustrating being home and out of action with 2 broken fingers but today I managed to fit the plastic trim piece that goes behind the handbake lever below the dash. Sourced one recently as my bus never had one in my ownership. I do wonder were they actually fitted to all years and models? Anyway, an easy little job made almost impossible with the use of only one hand - and not helped by a slightly deformed roll pin holding the handbrake handle on .

  2. Extended the length of a fuel pipe to the left dell carb and neatly p clipped them so all safe and tidy. I have a new throttle linkage to fit but.
Too tired and no time now for a couple of weeks bugger!

Took the perforated ceiling down (metal still in great shape but the soundproofing not so much).
Looks better than I feared it might...can leap gleefully in to bed, one day (far away from now ) and have no fear of ending up snuggling with the engine (not so far away).

Note carefully how VW used mastic everywhere there was a possibility of two pieces of metal vibrating (if your above-engine panels are metal .. ) . Probably worth repeating when you replace the sound proofing,.

Put it into the MOT. Preparation : wipe bug splats off windscreen, find locking wheel nut. Remove camping gear.

  12. I was concerned about the new travel regs and the possibility of France going off the approved travel list, so stayed put as long as we dare, then made a bolt for it so I could get back to work.

She is still popping on overrun, the dash lights have developed a mind of their own and the 40 degree C heat in France has softened some of the glue on the door rubbers, but she got me home :)

Put an 8ohm resistor in the VDO oil temp sender line to correct the reading at 120c for the US spec gauge.
Drove it yesterday in 34c up Ditchling Beacon to see what the temps are like. It’s fairly steep and slow especially when having to sit in 1st behind cyclists.
Topped out around 115c after getting to the top, which is more like what I’d expect. Still over-reads a bit below 120 but at least now I know, and it’s more accurate where it matters.

Once I’ve found a controllable variable heat source I can use for testing I can get some further measurements.

Still thinking to work out if I can use the digital cordless meat probe for CHT monitoring.

  15. Re-routed the solid petrol pipe that comes through the front tin (type 1 DP) so that it locates into the HT lead clip on the fan housing. I honestly never knew it was supposed to go there until I read it somewhere on TLB; think it may have been a post by @zedders, so thanks . Had to swap out the 2 wire clip for a triple and drill out to accept my 8mm Bosch leads, bend the pipe a bit and shorten the rubber hose slightly.

Finally (after 22 years) the hose is properly secured and looks 'comfortable' in it's proper position. Hoping this may help the hot starting vapour lock issues I always had now the rigid pipe is no longer resting on the inlet manifold.

A bit of a struggle with the 2 broken fingers again but I can't just sit around doing nothing! Only been 4 days and already the bandage dressing's looking like a Rab C Nesbitt cast off!

Got it back from the MOT, pass with the usual perennial advisories. Steering wheel play and a cracked windscreen.
And a rusty bit on the front beam.

  19. Ok, so new engine in last sunday. Finished the plumbing monday, but wouldn't start, only the occasional chuff. Started to check the basics, had fuel, compression (obviously) and spark, so had to be timing. It was late, so had at it again on Wednesday. I took number 1 plug out, and the rocker cover off to get tdc, and checked where the rotor arm was pointing and it was way off. It was at this point I spotted my schoolboy error. When I dropped the distributor in, I didn't do up the clamp, and it had popped up. It was just touching the drive, so was spinning enough to give me a spark when I checked. Popped it back in, set the static timing, it he fired off immediately. . Then I noticed the oil leak from the pump housing.
Yesterday, I made up a new gasket from card, and swapped it out. I used a bit of sealant for safety.
I just checked tonight. He fired up first flick of the key (after 5 days) , and no oil leak. , Except the sump plate is now leaking. Oh well, I'll drive him again some time this year.

Spent another hot day rolling about underneath with a paintbrush.

Got some satin black Rustoleum topcoat over the grey primer at last.

Fair way to go yet but I won’t have to worry about driving it through winter unprotected underneath.
