You can hear the pump running but not above the noise of the engine.

Took him for a run out yesterday. Not idling particularly well when cold (well - not at all really) but I'll get round to sorting a thermostat over Christmas with luck, hope that might help.
Drove through flood water on the way home in the dark and within a millisecond the windscreen was completely misted up. I'm guessing this means a hole somewhere in the heating pipes / heat exchangers underneath, and vapourised water being pushed through. Bum.
I also now have a spare gearbox sitting in the cargo area, which I really should lug into the garage …...

  3. De-misting on Bays unfortunately isn't great. Better if you've got the fresh air fans, but they make you go deaf...

  4. You got an initial priming pulse with the VW relay after turning the ignition on? That surprises me. Having become (depressingly :() familiar with the circuit, there appears to be no provision for doing just one after an initial power up on "15". Maybe a blip on the ignition input?

A 123 (as you well know) won't do anything ignition-wise until the engine's actually cranking round, by design.

Just bodged mine up with some cable, going to give it a go with a running engine tomorrow. Had enough for today. My brain's stopped working.

With the Accuspark distributor the relay gave a priming pulse as soon as the ignition was switched on, as it should, but with the 123 it doesn’t. Maybe I knocked a wire off but as the engine starts easily, I haven’t bothered to look.

  6. That is most odd. You were using the VW 321 906 059 C (or equiv)?

Yep, always the same relay – liberated from a scrapyard about 10 years ago.

  8. Nice one. They're not cheap.

Just read the Ratwell link you posted (should've done that in the first place). He found the same as I did, so I'm not going mad . You do need the relay in the ignition circuit before it will start doing it's business, so it (somehow) obtains a higher trigger voltage. I'll try it tomorrow.

I reckon your unit was just triggered by a blip on the Accuspark, rather than priming on power-up. There's nothing in the circuit that can do that (on the 3.300.300 at least).

    Tomorrow's another day...

So glad you're on the case Snotty. If we need another relay to do what we want it's not the end of the world. Another small session on the diagram :)

  12. Keep the one you've got (or ignore my ravings ;)). Mr Atwell has convinced me I'm not going mad. I'll try mine on my van tomorrow.

I think it’ll be like mine and won’t give the initial priming pulse with the 123 distributor.

  15. Hosed down my salt-caked underbody.

But, hey, that's enough about me...

The accuspark seems to fire once when powered.
So what you need is one diode from the starter ignition tag, and the other from the ignition pulse relay. So you get pump power while cranking, and then once it is spinning fast enough the 123 will produce pulses for the ignition pulse relay, which then feeds the other diode.
One of those dual schottky rectifier diodes out of a PC power supply will do.
Centre pin to pump, one side pin to starter, other side pin to relay feed.

Anyway, drove the bus to work and home again after changing the spade connectors on the Accuspark at the weekend and no ignition problens..
And saw an F35 just after it took off from a carrier in Portsmouth Harbour. Made a hell of a lot of noise but flew past quite slowly. Had time to get out of the bus , scan the skies and find the plane, about 2.5 miles from the ship.. Still in STO mode ..
An ex RAF colleague then showed me the video of it taking off a few minutes later.

  19. Checked the oil, coolant and pumped up the tyres. Found the owners handbook and having first checked moved the heater levers in the hope of some more warm air in the morning.

The pump runs as soon as the distributor starts rotating (while cranking) and when the engine is running and it stops when the engine stops. What is missing is the pump running for a second or so as soon as the ignition is turned on before cranking. The engine fires up easily so I’m not bothered about priming the carbs but it would be interesting to know if @snotty relay behaves the same way.
