Yesterday I changed the float valve in the 34 Solex, I thought it might have been passing fuel, also fitted a new top gasket. Today drove it to the local (ish) traction engine rally. I have to report it drove really well, got a lot of complements in the car park and I've got my enthusiasm back.

Oil pressure around 3 bar (drops to 1 at tickover) and temperature around 220 fahrenheit after a mix of town, dual carriageway and hills.

I know you already have a brake thread, but when did you last flush through the brake fluid, it does look like it could do with it.

    It's been a while!
I think I should, but priority was getting the brakes working yesterday. There's still the other side to do, so that might be the time to replace the whole lot with fresh
It does look a bit murky, doesn't it?!

It’s the water moister absorption that can be the issue. Water doesn’t compress and also rots the lines inside out.

Took out the driver’s seat and made/welded a better bracket to mount the seat on (mx5 seats) then painted it all ready to fit the new carpet I’ve had for ages

Today (after it stopped raining) I cleaned the alloy wheels.

As we are going to Camper Jam tomorrow morning I thought I ought to try to start the camper seeing as it’s been sat on the drive unused for 9 months.

It didn’t want to start and I’d charged/regenerated the battery the previous day. So I had to take the starter off which ain’t easy as the van is on an incline and I had to raise the rear offside wheel and remove it to allow a portly chap like me to get under to do the work.

Got the old starter out and tried bench testing it and it was dead. Then remembered I had a spare starter so dug it out and fitted it but had to put the wheel back on and lower the van (just in case).

The new starter jumped into action and was spinning……but the bendix was not engaging with the gears on the flywheel.

So I had to strip the old starter down and clean up the brushes and commutator in the hope it would work.

This meant the whole Shananagins of jacking the van up and working under it on an incline with one rear wheel holding the van in place (3 house bricks under/infront of the remaining wheels) had to occur again.

Finally I got to try the refurbished/cleaned old starter and it actually worked. It’s been a long 7hrs of panic.

But I still can’t work out why the new starter wouldn’t work and I’ve clearly got to buy a proper/correct replacement.

unfortunately when I purchase the new starter I did not have the old one off to compare them. But I know now. I just don't know what the other starter is for.

It's to do with the bell housing on the gearbox - both are correct for our gearboxes, but the bell housing differed in depth from earlier ones to later ones so the pointy bit that engages with the flywheel differs in length depending which arrangement you've got.
Hope that makes sense and that it is correct. I think it is. I've got a '73 bus with a Type 1 engine, which should have the middle years CE code gearbox (shallower bell housing?) but my gearbox is later, so it should have the deeper bell housing. Starter motors differ in length accordingly

  17. Scrooge hits the nail on the head! The starter matches the bell housing, not necessarily the gearbox (may have swapped at some point). Your pic shows an early and a later one. They're both "correct".

Lay in bed at 4:20 this morning as five large cows methodically licked the cold dew off the bus! Parked on a remote Welsh farm for some peace and quiet and a bit of a lie-in. Huh!!

Very poor Internet connection so can't upload the photo of the miscreants piled in a happy heap, fast asleep in the shade of some trees. Think I'm due for a nap now - been awake for five hours already . . .
