The ring grooves must be clean, if there is still carbon in the bottom of the groove the new rings can’t sit low enough and the ring end gaps must be correct – don’t make them a bit tight to wear in. It’s not easy to judge from the photograph but it looks to me as if the bores need to be honed a lot more, if you leave the glaze the rings will never bed in.

  2. Can you hone lots? They're like this in daylight...

Thought it was a quick in and out a few times with the whirly thing. ..

  7. Not an in the engine thing... guessing something fell on it after getting ready to go in and I never noticed.. I measure all of them for edge gap when putting the rings on and ran a broken ring through to clean them... which I couldn't do through that.. All tidied up now and ring side clearance re established at 0.08mm..

Piston still round enough to spin in cylinder with no catching anywhere
Hoping that's the problem but checking them all again and cleaning again.. and checking everything else on the way back up..

Oil control rings looks right to me but hone those cylinders again, and again.

  9. Better?

Are you not supposed to make a criss-cross pattern to aid oiling the barrel?

Google cylinder honing pattern and look at the pics.

  12. That's after wiping dirty oil and parafin mix off to have a butchers. . Trying to make a criss-cross .. its there but not showing much.. I'll have a last pass with a really slow spin to accentuate it..

  17. Well back together again but rain stoped play as everything is being done alfresco now. Still quite stiff seems to be when rockers go on even though valve springs are stock. Had a test spin up to raise the oil which seems to reach pressure sensor outlet ok but when I attach the extension pipe to get two sensors on it doesn't come out of the end of that!
Once I figure that out I'll give it another go.

But in the meantime... anyone here fitted a TDI starter to a 091 gearbox? It's got a bit more oomph I believe...

  18. I can confirm oil does come out if the engine turn fast enough.. I can also confirm it does start now but only ran for 30 seconds.. 10 seconds of which I spent trying to stop the flow of oil by putting the sensor in... I can confirm this is quite hard to do with oil squirting everywhere..
Tydying up.. recharging and getting ready for another go after tea!...
