Test run

  1. Is it OK to do the 15 min run in of a rebuilt engine still on the stand? There's a bracket to take the starter on the yoke..
    Looks like all the other test runs are done at ground level. ..

  2. Are you worried about altitude ;)? Fine to run the engine in the stand for as long as you like. All night, if the neighbours don't object.

    Just put the silencer on and remember to get it so it will keep on running for long enough in one go at 2000rpm.
    Its loud and an eternity of mild concern.

  5. Yeah, give it a thrash. If you've got a starter mount, running the engine up is painless. Mine started to roll down the drive, before the battery leads stopped it :eek:...

  6. Getting and keeping it running is my main concern with it being a total rebuild of an unknown engine never seen working... and I rebuilt the carbs!

  7. Don't forget to video it and you need to wiggle your bum whilst revving it

    Have you filled it with oil?

    Does it have a new cam?
    If not start it and look for leaks, no need for revs, but if new rings, keep some revs on until the choke comes off, rings will be stiff in the barrels and the rich mixture from choke will un-lubricate.

Not yet got to move it turned on its side to get out of garage!...but will fill, turn over with no filter till it comes out there then turn again till it appears at the oil pressure sensor on the end of the extension cable thingy... then put the spark plugs in then try staring it..... that right?

    Fill the oil filter first, crank with the plugs out until oil pressure builds up, then fire it up. Don’t crank it for longer than you absolutely have to - that’s when the cam has the most load with no lubrication.

    If you don't get oil pressure fairly quickly, you can take the roockets off to relieve the cam.

  14. Na ...messing about with stuck beam adjusters this morning and finding last bits/getting wiring ready to have a go tomorrow all being well..

  15. So ... how hard should it be to turn over with no plugs in... can pistons with new rings make it that hard of stood for a fee weeks for the starter to fail to make a full turn on its own? ...

  16. May be pretty stiff, but starter should be able to turn it if it's in good shape. What's it like turning by hand?

  17. New battery so that should have been good.. on charge now tho!..
    Starter .. unkown but wizzes away happily with no load..
    Don't know how hard it should be to judge really. . goes from easy to bit harder at just after tdc.. but no plugs so not compression

  18. On my re-done 1776 with new barrels and pistons, it was alarmingly hard to turn by hand, plugs out. Starter didn't have much trouble, though - it is geared right down.

    No other sounds of distress?

  19. Ta.. think battery might have been struggling and a long earth route.. Gave the battery 20 mins attached to the car and it spins it over.. not fast but enough to get oil to come out of the remote sensor pipe! Put the pressure sensor in now to stop the leak..

    off to have lamb Sunday roast now and sulk. . That'll cheer me up...

    Another go tomorrow..

  20. Starter needs to turn it over with plugs in so should be easy with out .... Mine after rebuild you could just turn by hand with no plugs
