Techenders/Tekenders the list - who/what Sept 2013

Discussion in 'Shows Events You've Missed unless you went' started by rickyrooo1, Jul 28, 2013.

  1. I have a shed load of engine parts like 8 lots of barrels, pistons with rings and 8 tin tube things lol. I don't know if all are any good .
What can I do and use to clean them up because they have all stud in the shed for a long time and some have rust showing.

  2. ive got wood ...:)

  3. Tuesday wildchild

    Tuesday wildchild I'm a circle!

You didn't have one the biggest to start with.

  4. I'd like to make my hazard lights work, but I'll need some guidance please, as electrics is like a black art to me.

5 years of hiding the knob in the ashtray for the MOT is probably more than enough.

I'll bring wires and crimps and fuses and stuff. More than happy to help with the other stuff people want to do

I'll have a look if you like. I've just fixed 2, the supply wiring goes all over the place on it's way. lol

  6. thank you Zed.

Should I bring a spare relay or anything else particular?

Not if your indicators work. I expect a wire will have fallen off fusebox, headlight switch or the flasher switch.

  8. indicators work lovely.

The only other electrical thing that doesn't is pulling the indicator switch up to flash the headlights/ switch to full beam does nothing, not even a click.

So how do you get an MOT?
That one's often the relay. The og ones get full of water that leaks in the windscreen. It depends where your fusebox is. They can be pulled apart and resurrected if they're not too coroded inside.

  10. it did used to work, it's the hazards that have always been dodgy.

The fusebox is up under the dash on the left side. I guess the same place yours is? I'll sort some pictures tomorrow.

Mines attached to the outer edge of the dash at the bottom. Not long after they started putting them above the cold air duct, these are the ones that can get waterlogged. Maybe a good twiddle of the fuses etc will get it going. Hard to say without rummaging about.

is there something missing from here?

so any ideas with what I need. I think I need a main crank shaft oil seal so will need the tool if anyone have's the
tool that would be great. I don't think pictures will give the clues with what's what's, dropping the
engine and stripping down is the way to go. So any help will be perfect. I have never worked on an engine
before, but am willing to get stuck in and try most things. I can make a great cup of tea or coffee ;)

You need (apart from oil seal) the flywheel o-ring for that job, I'll bring my torque meister to get the flywheel nut undone easily..
All the bottom tin is missing (you buy a set).
As you have J-tubes, there's also some blanking tin available - there was a thread on here a few months ago?
The two small pieces at the rear, fitted to the cylinder shrouds are missing.
The all important tin above push-rods is missing on one side (they're not handed).
The warm start hot air duct is missing. (can wait for another time).
As you don't have heat exchangers, you can get (from somewhere) blanking caps for the fan housing outlets with a certain sized hole that mimicks the pressure of the heating system. These would help the engine cooling.
You'll need a gasket set - Elring are best, the cheap sets with the orange push-rod seals are useless, you need white ones.
You might need barrels and pistons, but I think you said you have several old sets?
I don't suppose you have thermostat/linkage/flaps, but never mind, you have bigger fish to fry.
It runs smoothly as you know, I guess broken rings. :)

I'll do it this evening. You know I'm up for the service teaching if there are enough takers. If not I'll give you a hand (from the comfort of a chair ;) ).

and he has a working [electrically driven ] cutaway engine in his barn,

that he has blagged had shipped over from a belgian or german supplier,
its a great piece of kit and will be good for teaching the basics of timing valve adjustment etc...:)
