T1 engine rebuild

  1. I Checked the wear line earlier tonight it's spot on. There is also very little wear on the cylinders. I think they only have about 20 30 thousand on them. Compared to the 28o thousand the last set did it's not a lot

  2. Does anybody have a pic of the inside of and original unmachined head. I think mine have been machined. If they have I'll need to check cc and depth they've been done

There should be step for the barrel to sit on if that's it?

  5. This one the step has been removed when the heads were opened up for larger barrels

  6. Looks like my heads have been machined

I've not even looked at cleaning them but brushed away some dirt to check the lip. It's not there.
Shims might be needed after all.

  7. Back to it. I hope to be at a long block stage before Monday so some cleaning of barrels and heads to do then some reassembly.
One barrel clean and fitted with shim as there is no step in the head

  8. Up to putting heads on tonight. Are gaskets needed anywhere. Eg between barrels and case or barrels and head?

  9. Lap the barrels to the heads, no head gaskets required.

  10. Got on a bit more being embarrassed into action by 1973daisy and his bug

All barrels on and one head
    New pushrod tubes and seals[IMG]

  11. That's a physically impossible thing to do ....when lapping you do each item to something flat ( glass or lapping block) otherwise you end up worse than what you start with ...it's also impossible to get both barrels lapped to the same height .
The only way to ensure square ,parallel and the same length is by machining and measuring

  12. I just bolted em up in the same place as they came off. It ran ok even though ther was about 2.5mm of end float. It won't be doing a massive amount of milage when finished. I just want it to sound ok and not leak oil too much

    It'll be fine.
But you could have done with some sealant around the barrel bases.

  14. Plenty of permeatex at the bases. I'd rather it were slow and didn't leak
It used to leave a slick Like a bp oil rig

  15. Great thread Borninabug, I will be back many times as I am a month or so behind you with my engine strip.

  16. I am very slow on this one. The ten minutes at a time I am getting are adding up slowly

  17. Do the nuts and washers on the head studs inside the rocker covers need a coat of sealant. I know there is no pressure in the rocker covers but are they supposed to be sealed

  18. Finally got the other head on last night
Checked end float with flywheel nipped up and it seems good I'll put a dial on it tonight

  19. Half an hour while corrie was on resulted in a fitted oil cooler and both pressure relief valves fitted. I only got one crush washer in the gasket set so had to root one out from the magic box of seals

  20. Measured end float tonight with flywheel just nipped up and got 8 thou. I'm going to leave it and lock the nut to the right torque and measure it again. I smiling because the case was as mentioned a freebee with a bulk buy off eBay:)
