Subaru Gearbox Question

Discussion in 'Alternative engine in bus' started by Jacosmotor, Feb 22, 2017.

  1. right guys, got a 70 bay crew cab and a 2000 forester 2.0 n/a finally got some cash together (but looks like not enough) to get these two married wanting them to be happy ever after and receiving lots of advice (do it properly) was looking at using the subbi box, which buying the parts and having the machining done looks like it comes in at about £2500, to buy a converted box from fellows is £2700 plus £125 for linkage plus £640 labour (2 days) plus vat. Any advice!! Not really having anywhere to do the work will have to pay someone, one of my other questions is what's involved in fitting the box that takes 2 days.

It seems a lot of money if you already have a gearbox to use. My 5-rib doesn't feel particularly under- geared so far.
When I was at Fellows last they were suggesting that it's pretty rare for them to actually fit a Scooby gearbox.

  3. Would imagine some gearbox mounts and adjusting the bodywork in way of.

  4. If using subi box you can get a set of mounts for the box and engine. Have a look on their website, they have a good video on how to do all the work on the subi box.

Are fellows quoting £2700 +vat for supply only of a converted box?

  5. I agree with Bern, I had a 3 rib for a while with a 2L Scooby and that was fine. The 3 rib was recently extended (by Fellows/Bears) and that's fine too. Can you use the box you have?

  6. Hi all, yes fellows price for box supply £2700+vat. Will check out the video have been on subarugears website and seen the brackets and conversion parts required to convert my subbi box that's what I based my price on of £2500

If its £3k+ just for the box my decision is made.
Saved me a fortune this thread!

Just a question, is the Subaru box actually better than the bus boxes, as its designed primarily for a 4wd car not a 2wd bus, if so why?

It's just that the scooby box gears match the engine speeds.

  10. I am planning on going Scooby box as I am starting from scratch, when adding it all up it only adds about a grand overall to parts costs. Yes it's a lot by it's a fit once thing. If I already had a Scooby engine and conversion plate then I probably wouldn't bother going to a Scooby box

  11. My problem is the crew cab is SA Import and although it drives well now who knows what it's been put through also the engine had been changed was told by the guy I bought it from can't find anything out about it think the box could have been changed as it had 112 rears and 205 fronts. Not really well up on mechanicals but knowing the simplicity of VWs can't see 2 days labour unless it involves cutting the torsion tube

Presumably some of the labour is modifying the clutch and shifter mechanisms.
