Stupid winter! I miss my van!

  1. Hello all!

Was just wondering if anyone on here has produced their own curtains for their van?? Mine are all starting to look a little tired, so it may be time to replace them! I will obviously have my old ones as a template, but, as I have no experience in sowing etc i'm a little worried I be a bit out of my league on this one!! Or, does anyone know of a reasonably priced supplier? I have looked around a little bit, but all the ones I have found seem to be a little on the steep side price wise!

    Cheers

  2. I did all the upholstery and soft furnishings (Rock n' Roll Bed, Westie roof bed, curtains and cushions) in Daisy-Mae when we got her and it was time consuming (very time consuming) and I broke several sewing machine needles!! I am pleased with the result in the end but it is obviously not to the standard of someone who does this for a living!!

However, I will not be doing it again and when the magical mystical day comes that Daisy-Mae has a respray and we redo everything I will be paying someone else to do them for me.

Remember when look at cost that as well as the material you are paying someone else for the time and bother that you could spend doing something that you would rather do instead plus they will have a decent sewing machine that can cope with heavier fabric :)

Have a look at Delilah's, they have done some of the vans on here:

They advertise on here and are also on the forum .. username of Delilah / Delilahs ...

Hope that helps & good luck!

I've got an industrial sewing machine but I don't know how to use it. I've used an ordinary one before - not rocket science. I've going to make a leather interior. I've never done anything like it before, but then neither had DubNut before he/she made this. 8)
[IMG] Upholstery leather is about £1.50-2.00 per sq ft. Not the end of the world, though it is of course cow shaped which'll make it trickier!

  8. Do it zed

    Real men can sew

    Think of it this way

If you can concentrate enough too move the material through your fingers at just the right tension and controll the speed at the same time as watching if you have enough thread left to do the last run

You have most of the makings of a great lover

    Very good. :)
I think it'll turn out to be mostly nailing and stapling. I wonder what that makes me...

  12. Cheers for all the feedback.

I think i will give it ago myself, at the end of the day, I have time on my hands (Van in a nice warm dry barn till next spring!) so I should be able to muster something up in 4 months! Even if I have to get my Mum to do it over Christmas!!

Anyway, I prefer doing all the stuff to the van myself, thats the whole point of owning Vw's isnt it?! 4/5 years ago, I would of struggled to change spark plugs, these days I can drop/service/put back in Vera's engine, which I'm quite pround of! So, how hard can curtains be?!?!?!?

Curtains are a piece of cake if you don't line then. I made a set for my Westy. Camper curtains don't need lining - you don't want too thicker material or when you open them they'll bunch up and won't open far enough. Having said that if you find the right material maybe you can - Delilah's are lined and they look good.
