Hi everyone, I hope you are all well? I went to go out in the camper yesterday but the rear brakes were stuck. The wife took it out about a week ago and put the handbrake on when she got back (Not overly tight). The offside unstuck itself when I popped it in reverse and gave it a small amount of beans, but the near side is being quite stubborn. It is parked on a slightly sloping gravel drive and so a little worried if I need to jack the rear up.. Any thoughts as to what I can try next?
If it is the emergency brake, then rocking or pulling brake on/off several times may fix. I had this problem but it was a bad brake line. Sent from my SM-G986U using Tapatalk
Tap but block the van first so it does not run you over if it comes off, otherwise try again but try to get a rocking motion going.
Drive it down the drive with the wheel skidding on gravel if it will do it until you reach the level. Try putting the handbrake on and driving off, it might provide a bit more force on the stuck drum. Or chock it by driving wedges downhill of the front wheels and the unjammed wheel to jack it up.. but then you will have a nightmare getting the drum off for the same reason the handbrake is stuck It probably was down to leaving the handbrake on with a wet drum. Modern brakes use metal rather than the ideal asbestos.
Then check your brake shoes, I had the same problem and the old hit with hammer trick worked a treat....later in the season, the shoe material separated from the backing.....obviously rubbish bonding agent.
Strip it and clean the brake dust out! Rough up the shoes with p45 grit and do the same with the drums. Probably be alright for ages, then!
As everyone said, give it a wallop, or just drive backwards and forwards on a grippy surface. I would then strip the brakes and give them a good clean.
If you have an impact socket, put it on the wheel nuts and hit that...so they say. When it happened to me and I freed it by slipping the clutch it tore 1-2mm thick chunks from the shoes which remained firmly attached to the drums. Devil of a job getting the drum off.
Don’t reverse, you’ll just jam everything tighter. Put some revs on and drive forward hard - should unstick with a terrific bang. Unless of course you’re nose up to the garage door. If so, see the many fixes above.
Thanks everyone! I gave it a few whacks with a hammer and eventually it came free with a bit of a bang! It is parked on a slope facing the house, so I was a bit worried that trying to drive forward would result in me going through the kitchen! Thanks again to everyone for the advise!
