Stuck in Third

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Sir Arthur, Mar 27, 2012.

  1. Coming back from football tonight it was getting harder and harder to change gear. Eventually it stuck in third and I had to nurse it home. Now parked up can anyone give me any advice on how to unstick it or even come and help?

The gear stick moves around but all the violent throwing I can muster wont get it out of gear.

EDIT - I've just looked at VZi for similar topics and all the answers are well beyond me. Is there anyone who could lend a hand as where I'm parked might well be impossible to drive out of in third?

  2. Is the gear selector rod still connected to the selector on the end of the gearbox?

  3. Mate I'm clueless to what any of that means! I'm going to have to get to bed and then have a look in the morning. I appreciate you being first to answer.

  4. Get underneath and look at the front of your gearbox, this is between your rear wheels. Follow it towards the front of the bus, it will taper to a point and should have a rectangle bracket where your shift rod is connected.

  5. There is a grommit bush thing that gets wear inside the nose cone ,unfortually I changed this and it did not cure the problem, you might be lucky... ;D

  6. I just managed to get it in neutral by throwing the stick over to the far right (unsurprisingly for something German). Tried to get some gears but now it's stuck back in third. The stick can now spin which I'm sure isn't good but might help diagnose what's wrong. All I want to do is get it out of where it is (which does need reverse and first ideally) and then get it far enough away from jobs to call the AA.

Get yourself underneath, it's not complicated. Follow it from the front to the back and take photos of anything looking dodgy.

It sounds like the ball and cup have been parted or broken - this directly below the gearstick.

  8. OK. This is when I hate the fact that it's been lowered...

  9. Well that was fun. The bus is indeed too low for me to get far enough under. And as it's chocked on a hill I can't jack it up. Perhaps the VW fairies will fix it overnight.

  12. Well that could have gone better. Loosened up but it was resolutely remaining in third. Ended up taking the gearstick off and found that the sprung pin that goes through the ball at the end is now missing*. Thankfully Dubz by Dan is going mobile for me and coming to have a look at the weekend.

*Admittedly it wasn't missing when I started fiddling around with it... The gearstick is now in the footwell along with my tools and various screws and washers in a piece of art I have entitled "Man Stropping of in a Huff after Buggering up Simple Repair Job".

  13. sorry, I am not convinced, mine was the box ,can`t get my head around why third if it`s the linkage...

But hope for you it`s a simple fix... O0

at least you caught the spring.. ???

  16. Diagnosis is in - shāgged hockey stick in the gearbox. At least now it's in first so I can get it back on the street for the recovery truck.

  17. "Shagged hockey stick in gearbox"? What on Earth could that mean?

  18. Inside the gearbox is a selector lever which is shaped like an L, or a hockey stick.
