Struggling to change gear whilst driving. Any ideas

Despite the garage trip I'm Still struggling to change gears. I don't think they have adjusted the clutch cable enough, so back to the garage tomorrow hopefully! The biting point is too near the floor and resistance when pushing peddle down is not for a couple of inches. So I've been able to use the van whilst on holiday, but it isn't right still!

 

Should be about 25mm/1" of free play at the pedal I believe.

 

Hopefully sorted again. I said to the mechanic: a friend says it needs a mole grip and two hands to tighten the cable. He said your friend knows nothing then! He started to tighten the wing nut and I said the cable is turning. He went and got his mole grip. Then did it as it should be done! Biting point a lot higher now and gear change easy again. Thanks again to everyone.

Some non Vw mechanics have *******ed me right off. I said to the bloke doing the clutch the 1st time that the biting point needed to be much higher, he said I've done 2000 clutches, I know what I'm doing! Then I have to bring it back as he obviously didn't know what he is doing.

I spoke to Zed last night, he advised how to adjust clutch properly, I told the 2nd mechanic, who said your friend doesn't know what he is talking about! He then tried to adjust the wing nut by hand and the cable turned as zed said it would! He then scurried off to get his grips. I should have shouted " my friend doesn't know what he is talking about, does he".

Fingers crossed for no more clutch dramas!

Think tis the modern training methodology teaching is based on the manual not from basic principles stray off the path and they are fooked.

 

Na, just a know-all retard, he'll probably get the sack and be working at a neighbouring garage next week. Mechanics often get paid peanuts so don't bother trying too hard. Round here they've all worked everywhere, a continual merry-go-round.

 

Show them a copy of the Official Service Manual aka Bentley and they will bow down to the instructions in the Book, as that is what they are trained to do.

 

Not a good idea to shout things at mechanics who are holding large spanners or still have your car in bits - you did the right thing!

Hope it didn't wind the cable up too much before the grips were on, or that one will snap sooner.....ask me how I know!

 

It would have snapped sometime since this 5 year old thread I suspect!

 

Probably snap next time I drive it, now it's been jinxed on here.

 

But now you carry a spare cable and know how to fit and adjust it.

 

I carried a spare cable five years ago, which meant my holiday could continue.
Although it did need to go to the garage at the time as a bolt had sheared off and needed drilling out.

I have carried mole grips ever since though!
