i didn't realise vans have a reduced speed limit on dual carriageways compared to cars or "car derived vans" it basically depends on how your vehicle is registered and what weight it is capable of carrying, so for example a fiesta van is classed as a car and can go 70mph on a dual carriageway whereas a vw caddy can only go 60mph, this doesn't affect a van which is classified as a "motor caravan" but does if yours is still on the v5 as a van https://www.gov.uk/speed-limits this means when i get my caddy i'll need to remember 50mph on single carriageways, 60 on dual, and 70 is only for motorways.
Yep. My brother and I were driving virtually identical Vans at 70 along the A14. He got a ticket I didn't 'cos mine is registered as a Motor Caravan, whereas his is a crewcab van, in actual fact they're virtually the same. I re-registered mine so I could take it on IOM ferry for £170 instead of £600!
i didnt know that im surprised ive not had loads of tickets ive drove a van for 20 odd years at the wrong speed {i dont like cars i carnt park them}
when you reason it through it's just another out of date rule in my opinion, for example as i say a 2009 vw caddy is limited to 60mph on a dual carriageway because it's capable of weighing over 2100kg when loaded, yet a landrover discovery which weighs more than that unloaded can go 70, and i know which would stop quicker.
theres a lot of rules that dont add up properly but the main one is why can we only do 70 on the motorway
That's easy - politicians are more concerned with being re-elected than being sensible. They think they'll lose lady-votes if they increase the limit. So it's the ladies that are to blame really, even though they haven't actually asked them.
In my experience that's fairly typical. I was married for 25 years and my ex NEVER ONCE uttered the word "sorry".
the speed doesn't affect me in the bay as it's on the logbook as motorcaravan, but i don't do 70 anyway, i was moreso saying this for those of you with "vans" i only found this out off a caddy forum i've just joined in preperation for the arrival of mine on tuesday.
nope no pic's yet, i'm not going that route, purely having it because it's so cheap, it's my brothers ex company van 2009 1.9 tdi 104bhp in black, rough round the edges as it's been a work hack - but to me 2 grand cash...... rude not to.
i drive long wheel base transit and stick to the speed limits but in the car the wife constantly drives faster than me, she is a good driver too. i have tried setting the cruise control so it would only go 80mph but she doesn't know how to switch it on so she just goes her normal speed.........too fast.
I knew that - I done a speed awareness course once for being a naughty girl! Saved me getting points tho! And this is about one of the only things I did learn that day!
Yep I knew it. Was warned about it after I bought m t5 a few yrs ago my van is still reg as commercial rather than van with windows. Seems stupid realy cos mine don't carry any real weight in it now except when her indoors gets into the van. Don't apply to me much cos I drive like an old man.
that is the reason for the national speed limit sign... as different classes of vehicle have to obey different speed restrictions on the same piece of road,
