Resurrecting this..again...just to try and keep it in one place.

I've got gas struts (SGS) had them for years and the roof real estate is occupied by solar panels so that idea is out.

Currently the spare is front mounted on the plate type mount, I do have the 'deluxe heavy duty' one to go on that puts a bit of weight onto the deformation panel but ...

Has anyone, anywhere, perfected the rear swing out yet?
GoWesty do a modular system which works but isn't very err aesthetically pleasing.
I've got pics and measurements of the Landmark system that I took from @Merlin Cat s bus mmmm, quite a while ago.

Chip goes away for a makeover next week and it's something my man could fab if I wanted him to. Mrs Monkey isn't convinced and I take on board Mike's comments about a rear ender.
    Just fancy a change
    So, anyone done one recently?

  4. I started having a go when I did my front one. Still like one on the rear I think! But not the drop down ones. Done that…. Got on my nerves!

Yeah, you may recall I had a Bluebird one for a while 'in stock' and never fitted it.
I was having a good look earlier. Fixing isn't as easy as on a T3 because the T3 vents are removable and you can drop a reinforcement plate down, bloody knuckles are the price!
Also, the bumper mount. It'd need to be somehow connected to the irons, but then how to avoid obscuring the rear light?

  6. I also have gas struts from SGS…. Which… I specified myself with a bit of simple maths and a few drawings. They send me a Christmas and birthday card every year and call me regularly to make sure I’m ok!

    Good read that ;).

  8. I think the main weight needs to be at the bottom with any top bracket simply there for reinforcement and regulation via a gas strut (lol)… possibly needs to be directly attached to bumper iron. I dare say it could be easier done as aa adaptation to a tow bar…. Which is a lot more substantial and would share the loads and stresses !

Good point. Don't have a tow bar, but something could be fabricated behind the bumper to spread the load.
We had that 'incident' in Spain where I needed to get into the engine bay on the T3 to dampen down the fire , so I'm also mindful of getting into the engine bay despite the Blaze Cut that sits menacingly under the top hatch.

  10. That was the T3 wasn’t it? Better access on a bay. Locking mechanism need to be un-faffy

Much better. I'd also like to be able to vent the hatch on the Gail Wayman twisty bracket thing that attaches to the lock. Possibly asking too much with that as the mount needs to be reasonably close to the body not too look stoopid

  12. Took me a minute to decipher that. If camped just swing it out. You wouldn’t have hatch open when driving!

Sorry, yeah, but I like things to be neat at night. Get away quick an all that...

  14. So needs to pivot from the rear of the bumper so you have the clearance for your Bill Wyman bracket!. Actually that should be easiest but puts the weight away from the fixings so a bit more strain potentially

We should design the perfect carrier!
Likely I'd be the only fool to use it though:rolleyes:

It's been tried hasn't it? I don't think it exists.
Leave it on the front where it's out of the way and easy to access. You might think it uglyfies the front and I wouldn't argue with that, but it uglifies the rear too AND gets in the way plus these thing always seem to end up with one of these horrible clips.

Yeah that's sort of where I'm heading Steve.
It's convenient on the front and out of the way as you say. I guess 13 years after it was front ended and stuffed with filler isn't too bad!
There's a circular impression of the old tyre brand in the panel where they bolted the spare back on and it wasn't quite set!
At least the replacement carrier will spread the load a bit better.
