  3. Made a start on the doors and sliding door today...

Also made a start on the rear of the van:

So far easy to do - just time consuming

    ;D

  4. it's looking good. did you roller the silent coat on?

  7. Glad to hear you got stuck in too!

Today I managed to do a great deal more. Will post pics tomorrow. Haven't done floor yet.. Did the cab doors, Parts of the bulkhead, Sliding door and opposite panel to sliding door. Almost used 1 pack so far, the stuff seems to be really good.

I resorted to hair dryer today as the seal is so much better. The sound of doors closing is very different.
    :D

  8. More pics and text please as im in the deciding stage of what im going to do

  9. i'm doing this at the moment as well, whats best to use on the inside of the roof? are you going to seal it all in with a vapour barrier( plastic sheet) to prevent condensation

SparkyWig (don't thnk he posts on here - prototype bay owner) has just removed his interior panels. He has celotex style insulation. He had to soak up about a pint of condensation from the floor.

    Just saying...

  11. :- theres so many opinions on this its difficult to decide whats best, if you are sleeping in a tin box surely you need to have some sort of vapour barrier /insulation in the roof and sides to prevent condensation ? or is an air gap behind the headlining enough? what is the best way to insulate a van on a budget? so far i've applied sound deadining patches to the inside of panels which seems to work well for sound deadening, any advice much appreciated.

    Cheers

Personally I'm going to do just the sound deadening patches and leave it at that. I've had buses for 20 years and never put any insulation in any of them. As I said^ with all those single glaze windows it's pretty hard to insulate effectively + you need some draught in there anyway or you'd suffocate/too much condensation. The westy had some loft type stuff wedged in here and there which didn't cause any damp problems. :)

When I see you guys sticking stuff permanently on every inside surface, I hope I'm not in the restoration business in 10 years time...

  14. I thought I would add a few pictures to illustrate my progress so far (saves starting a new thread)

Basically I started with the cab doors as you can see previously.

From this I moved to the bulk heads as these looked they could benefit with some deadening material
    [IMG]

The panel opposite the sliding door was next up, and frankly with this panel I went for maximum coverage (sounds like the same as you Ermintrude!)

You can make out the application of the sound deadening material between the horizontal metalwork
    [IMG]

The next photo shows how I used the closed cell foam to press up against the sound deadening material to both insulate and create a better sound barrier
    [IMG]

where the edges of the foam were exposed, I used foil tape to create an additional seal and whilst I was at it I tidied the additional wiring loom from lesiure battery to front of van and misc electrics up (the black cable wrap material)

In contrast the sliding door, "less was more" was the approach I took:

From this I used the foam and the foil tape to close off the 4 inset panels, ( i dont have a picture of that at the moment, but will upload one soon enough)
Over the top of this I will layer the foil bubble wrap (thermawrap) to create the final insulation layer
    [IMG]

With regards condensation - yes I am aware that its a problem, but I intend to keep an eye on things and see whether all of this makes the problem worse or better.

  15. Am i missing something?? What sound do you hear that you dont want to?? It maybe my old ears but i find my van quite quiet for a van. Only noise i tend to hear is wind whistle at speed :)) Either that or i just love what ever sound it makes?? :)

  16. nice one Andy_H! yes, my opp slider looks exactly the same (except i have no wiring). will nick your idea on the bulkheads, too.
Must admit i was getting very obsessed with ringing panels. the slider had a rattle and i spent ages trying to find it and stop it. my knuckles are sore from 'testing'. :D

why are you sealing the closed cell with tape? and wasn't it a bugger to get behind struts when it's soo sticky?!

not sure about getting thermowrap, may just make do with deadener and foam... dunno. so worried about the extra weight. mine hardly moves with all camping gear in as it was... :/

think i will need another 20 sheets and any left i can use for the bug when his restoration is (started and) complete. :)
