  3. I have looked on JK for a new filler hose, breathers and fuel pipes but i am a little confused about what to buy, its not even get the engine out and tank removed because i am away at work so any help on what i should order to be able to replace all fuel lines and breathers and the filler tube would be much appreciated
    its a 1971 1600cc

If it is a 1971 and is genuinely a 1971 then the fuel tank breather will be a single pipe going up beside the fuel filler hose. If you take off the "paint tin lid" on the right of the engine bay, you will see a big hose and a smaller one if it is this arrangement.

[If it is a bus "restored" when there was a benefit to having it over 40 years old, then there may be a more recent fuel breather system to be found, as it was more attractive to pass off a newer bus as an old one when it came to selling it "no need for road tax or MOT" ]

In the case of later buses, there will be loops of metal pipe in the rear vents and a T shaped arrangement of breather pipes just under the roof of the engine bay. For these, the breather hose can be short pieces of fuel pipe cut to length joining the long metal tubes.

    Take a look at https://ratwell.com/technical/FuelHoses.html

Fuel filler hoses are different between the two as well.

My 68 had all that, The fat one on the tank is to prevent blow back when filling up. In those days there were still a lot of garages that didn't have clever pumps. You could block it at the tank these days.

  6. Oh the wiff of petrol from a T2. Tell me about it, ive done all the fuel hoses with ethanol proof barrier hose. Changed all the breather link hoses & repaired a hole on one of the breather bulbs.
Trip up to Northumberland and guess what  still stinks  Luckily I found the fuel pump was seeping fuel from a seal near the top of the pump. Ordered a replacement to the campsite so hopefully we may have a less worried journey back later this week

  7. Thanks for your comments, I have looked but can't find the diagrams on here but I am pretty useless on computers lol got a load of good information and advice and i certainly have to look at the full fuel system because the van lay for 4 years before i got it 4 years ago and nothing has been replaced in that time as my time was spent doing the body and the interior and this winter's project was going to be dropping the engine and painting the engine bay and was going to check the fuel tank at the same time but all these comments are pushing me to forget going away in the van In September and wait until i have looked at the fuel pipes and filler hose etc. so once i get home from work this time i might use the two weeks to check what fuel pipes and breather hoses are on the van and look at getting them changed out instead of going away. Or am i being too cautious?

Drop the engine. Take off the fuel tank firewall.
You will need to do that bit to get at hoses on the fuel tank anyway.
Identify parts needed, take pictures and post on here for confirmation. Order, replace these and all the fuel hoses underneath, buying e.g. Cohline, Gates or Goodridge named brand and type ethanol proof hoses.
    Note any rusty holes exposed..
Leave painting the engine bay for another time..

  10. No that's one of the spare engines the engine that is in the van is the original engine my plan is to drop it out in the winter (winter project) and get someone to go over it while i paint the engine bay and now look at the fuel tank and all the fuel hoses and breathers
Don't ask me why i have 4 engines and 2 gear boxes lol i advertised and got a few replies so bought them as "they won't go wrong" lol
Is there anything else that is a "should do" when the engine is out?

  11. Thanks very much Iain where does 28 connect to?

  12. I will need to check when i get home but i think the tee that links the breather pipe work to the air filter is missing could be wrong but another thing to check once i get home

  13. Thanks Mekedjames much appreciated you taking the time to comment, i get so much good advice on here which is essential for someone like me who is only just getting there with setting the points and changing oil and basic bits and pieces
Engine out then i will follow your advice and wait until then to order the parts and will seek advice at the time

28 connects to the air filter – it’s shown misplaced on the drawing for clarity, the filter is actually closer to the fuel tank.

  15. Take some pics of your engine bay set up before you remove anything then we might see if there’s anything obviously wrong!

IME a missing connection to the carb won't cause a "strong" smell of petrol. That T piece, like all **** rubber bits lasts 10 seconds and I never notice a smell when it falls apart.

  18. hi all i was up at the workshop today and took the van a run just to charge the battery really so ran it for about 20 miles and when i got back to the workshop it was stinking of petrol but i threw a wooden board under the van and no leaks are evident but the smell was really strong and the engine was cracking it was so hot

Any suggestions what it might be and more importantly what if anything I should look at / for

    Cheers
