I have a Big Mac that the kids tend to hog which is really fast, I end up using a MacBook Pro that is 10 years old that is getting slower and slower. I suspect its full of crap. I have watched tutorials on speeding it up but I think most of them are in Greek as I dont understand any of it. I have things like Plex [whatever that is] trying to start all the time but I cant find the bugger hididng to clear it out!
My mate sent his to a local bloke to sort after his bricked , but I worry about my personal details on it. Would the personal data be a problem or can I do something to protect it.??

Back up your personal data, then delete it, before handing it over to some shop, If you are that worried. Or take it to Apple and pay the price and trust them. Then restore personal data.

Or back it up and do a factory reset type of thing, then reload personal data, before paying a shop to do it .

Apple will politely suggest that maybe one would prefer a shiney new poofer to this old fing.

I just did a factory reset on my 10 year old Windows laptop and in that way got rid of several hundred programs I dont use. Then reloaded the free ones. And it starts in under a minute instead of staggering to life in 5 to 10 minutes. (Laptop cost MacBook price back in 2010, £1600, so its about the same performance as a £500 machine today)

  3. ^this.

Or just back everything up, start afresh, and copy across just the stuff you want/need.

Nothing wrong with Plex starting up ... don’t know how we’d have survived lock down without it

It’s impossible for an Apple product to not be better than anything else ever invented ever.

Are you sure it’s a real one?

If it is, it’ll be like that moment in Star Wars when Obi Wan felt Alderon had been destroyed.....a million voices (clad in polo necks and wearing stern Scandinavian glasses) cried out in terror, and suddenly fell silent.

Ours is a 2010 MacBook and it’s slower than my van!

Plex looks like a paid-for media player app.

The other thing is that the OS updates will be making your machine do more and more housekeeping, virus scanning than 10 years ago even for Apple.

I had a Windows 7 netbook that worked perfectly new but ended up taking 30 minutes to start Windows after some years because they insisted on doing a "compatibility scan" that the original Windows 7 never did. Then it told me to update to Windows 10 then it said the machine was too old when I clicked Yes.

    So now it runs Linux.

  9. They hide stuff well on a Mac. All for the common good, tho’

  10. I watched a programme about steve jobs on sky documentaries the other night. I had no idea he was such an a hole.

Ive got quite a few Apple products and for a while I’ve been thinking they ain’t all they are cracked up to be. A lot of smoke and mirrors I suspect. There does seem to be an annoying stream of silly little bugs and issues with their iOS.

I guess when you know you’ll sell billions of dollars worth of something before you even start to design it. You maybe take a bit less care.

Originally well designed USA made products built a fan base who now put up with / fight for latest launched version but run of the mill stuff built cheaply in China and sold at premium prices.
