Been planning this for a while and now things are starting to come together so I thought I'd document it just in case anyone was interested. This has been on the cards for a long but I've had to save for each part and wait for one to turn up at the right place.

The idea is to give the van an update/upgrade in the power department.

Starting with the gears at the cab end down to the exhaust.

Sometime in February (hopefully) we will be dropping the engine and box to do the following:-

    • Sort engine bay (there is a bit of rust in there that has been well hidden by matt black paint long enough)
    • Straighten and lube the gear linkage conduit
    • Refurb all bushes etc on the gear linkage
    • Stick a Gene Berg shifter at one end
    • And a 091 gearbox at the other
    • Build and install 2056cc type 4 engine with twin Webers, uprated heads, torquey cam and 4-1 exhaustHere's what I have so far (been collecting for quite a while)
      • Donor 2L type 4 engine (courtesy of a TLB member)Twin Weber 48 IDF carbs (overkill but a good price so couldn't resist)
        • Gene Berg shifter
091 Gearbox (courtesy of another TLB member)
EMPI 4-1 exhaust (not my first choice but will do as it was cheap)2 new heat exchangers (from another 2 TLB members)
I'll keep this thread updated as this arrive/get built.

Having the standard 2L heads reworked to 42x36 and the cam will be 86 web cam.

He's having the usual old car blues and thinking that a newer vehicle may be more for him.

Very nice. Just make sure you have those carbs jetted correctly.

  12. Looking forward to seeing this

Rusty originally had a 2l but now has a 1600 and I was going to find a 2l and warm it up like yours. Just been researching what you can do with a Type 1 though and a 1776 or even bigger looks interesting

What sort of real world performance are you expecting?

    Cheers,

  14. LOL, probs all of the above.

Rolling road will be interesting. My guide is the wasserboxer in my T25, just done a top end rebuild and with FI is running really sweet so probs close to 100-110 BHP. Fitted with an auto but goes pretty well for a brick with a hi-top ???

Reckon I want above 100 in Rusty, would like 120 but needs to be low done not top end and reliable with a standard box. That is why I was thinking T4 motor rather than T1, but having looked at some of the build stuff on T1 it looks an easier and cheaper way to go maybe.

Still learning on aircooled's so just gathering data at the moment - might build one of each and see which I prefer :)) :)) :))

Had to pay tax on the bits :( still cheaper than UK though.

The block is in for cleaning and welding (someone broke a bit off). The heads go in tomorrow.
