The last time I saw something like that, it was in a school text book about the industrial revolution
I picked my curtains up today... made by a friend who knows about stuff like that, unlike me who completely flunked Home Ec in school.
    Good luck Zed!

Black curtains, black thread - what can go wrong?
I can assure you this thing runs like a sewing machine.

ok, that is right. the reason its bunching up under the material is because you dont have enough upper tension. if its snapping the thread when its between the plates loosen the tensioner a bit or use a stronger thread

This thing would sew through your arm without slowing down.

Obviously the lower half is in a shark tank to keep the motor cool.

Thanks for all your help and confirmation that I might have it threaded right!
Number 7 on the diagram has gone missing, I can see the hole it fell out of. lol If it causes a problen i'll bodge something.
I have the black thread I want to use for curtains loaded up and seems to be sewing evenly now, just having a dinner/whisky break then I might make a curtain. :)
Was good fun loading up the bobbin. Simple things eh?

The curtains aren't the type with curtain tape and hooks - far too tricky!

  13. I always hand sew. And, how do you keep changing your user name? zedbed, zed and now zedders

  14. Ok sorry been busy & not watching thread, you have your tension wrong on the underbobbin not top thread. Also both threads need to be the same thickness so load your underbobbin with top thread. you adjust the underbobbin tension by unscrewing the small screw on the side of the carriage to make it tighter. when it is tight enough you should be able to hold the thread & the weight of the underbobbin carriage should not slip. undo the top thread tension to about half & start from there & adjust as necessary as the stitches should interlock. you will also need to do a lock stitch to prevent the stitches from coming undone by going forwards then backwards then forward again a few (3/4) stitches, there is a lever to enable the machine to run backwards without turning fabric. there should be a foot tension screw at the top of the machine where you can adjust the foot pressure. Go slow, don't panic & stop to adjust material if it is all going Pete Tong. I have pics below.

    Where's the fun in that?
Thanks for taking the time to type all that out, I've done 3 sides - yep forwards and backwards. My ex used to make curtains for posh knobs in Bath, pencil pleats blah di blah, I have the basics, it's the mechanics I was struggling with. A bit wobbly but getting better. :)

Cushion covers next, but that material was 10x the price...

  17. Got to get to grips with piping first!! Did you sort the tension out? You want it just right. There are loads of vids on youtube re this & more ...... some quite explicit!!

Yes sorted dude, I made a curtain, it fits a treat, but as I have it slid on ali rails i need to allow a bigger hem as i can only get the bugger half open. I have plenty of material, I expected a few cock-ups.

  19. A good way to get a straight hem is to fold it over a thickish straight edge of the right size to give you the correct opening & stitch it loosely in place then pull out the straight edge. Thick cardboard will do. Be patient & you can always un-pick any mistakes with a one sided razor blade or sharp stanly blade.
