Seat belts and seats

  1. Hi

The wife is a childminder and she wants to by a car which has 3 spaces for child seats in the back. All she can find is cars for about £40k. However I was thinking of putting seat belts and "proper" seats in the back of the van. Do you think I can put three proper seats in the back with seat belts?

  2. What do you mean by proper seats? There are mounts for 3 seatbelts in the back of a Bay.

  3. She wants one with iso fix

  4. She won't get ISO fix in a 1970s van ;)

Peugeot 307SW.. has three identical rear removable seats.. and room for two more behind. Theres a Citroen about the same vintage.

Now quite cheap, no DPF, DMF, catalytic converter .. why I am keeping my 04 version going as long as possible. If I want to go into a clean air zone I take the T2, or decide that any city with a clean air zone doesnt deserve my presence.

I don’t think that they thought of Health and Safety so much as they do,now, back then…

  8. I'd suggest looking at a multimac. They aren't cheap but much cheaper than a 40k car it can also be moved between different vehicles. We have had 3 kids in the back of our westy with it

  11. I always feel a bit apprehensive taking the Grandson in the camper. Up to now have only taken him on a short journey. Just hasn’t got the safety aspect that modern vehicles have with airbags etc.

  12. Hello,

beside the 3 static belt mounts below the rear seat
there were for left and right also from VW simple solid brackets available for automatic seat belts mounted by 2 screws usable for childs (see VW old parts catalog page 082-20):

  13. Regards the original post then effectively its a commercial endeavour and needs to live up to what a reasonable parent might expect for their kids. You sure you want to ferry them about in a bay? No issues with my own kids or indeed if anyone else was happy for me to transport their kids for whatever reason but my experience is ancient history now and peoples expectations are different these days but as per gooders post above if your not happy and believe you need all the gubbins that makes us safer these days then frankly why do it. or why even drive one yourself.

  14. If you are handy with fabrication then you can fit iso-fix mounts to the back of a bus - there are weld in bars you can get (you would not be the first - google T2 iso fix and there are a few articles, mainly using a ford based bar) . However, there is a liability issue to consider here if using for childminding, as @Dicky suggests. Parents will probably say yes to the idea of childminder driving a delightful old VW camper with their kids in, but a firm and resounding no if asked would they want the same with non-factory installed restraint systems! I have no concerns about taking my kids in any of the old sheds I have driven, but that is a personal choice, and not one I have ever inflicted on other peoples kids.

I am not sure what you are searching for - there are a huge range of cars that would take three car seats in the rear, starting sub-£1000 to around £5k for a nice looking one? Search Berlingo Multispace for postman pat chic, ford galaxy like all the other childminders, the Ford SMax for the hint of authoritarian child minding, the VW Touran for something VW, any of the Elgrande/Serena type Japanese grey imports for chrome bling, the list goes on. The 7 seat wagons mostly have iso-fix as they are made for transporting sproglets....

  15. The grandson is probably more likely to survive a crash in a Bay than you are...

The other thing is you will need business use insurance on the van which might be costly on the classic policy
