Sealing a dusty concrete garage floor

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Zebedee, Jul 9, 2015.

  1. The floor in my garage is really dusty. Its been brushed by whenever anything is moved it just creates more dust. :(

Has anyone used this stuff to seal the surface and stop everything turning white with dust?

We used a 50/50 mix of PVA and Water on my Dads garage floor - three liberal coats and its been fine for many a year :D

  4. let me know how you get on, as i have the same issue. The concrete was too watery when it was poured, and it's dusted ever since...a real PITA.
At some point in the future, I'm going to grind it back to a sound surface and epoxy it, but for now, I just live with it....
I've looked into different chemicals and treatments, and from what I can gather, the PVA based sealants can be unreliable, if the surface gets wet....I can't really comment as I've not tried it. Give it a whirl....it worked for @MorkC68

  5. You can get waterproof pva I think.

The Everbuild stuff is concentrated silicate based according to the fact sheet and reacts with the lime in the cement. It says 24 hours after the 2nd coat the whole floor needs washed down to remove any interacted material. Should be fun as my garage has a threshold plate inside the doors.

    Water it.

  8. Mine's had an MG parked in it for the last 30 years - a nice coating of oil seems to keep the dust down.

  9. Had a similar problem recently at my workshop. One half of the floor was painted with floor paint, the other half we just laid down some 1/8" sheets of hardboard. Where the sheets met one another we stuck them together with gaffa tape. The painted side didn't last five minutes before it started chipping off, the hardboard on the other hand has worked really well, taken loads of abuse, and made the workshop much more comfortable. It was also much easier and less messy... You could use vinyl, carpet, plywood, lino, whatever, but IME it's easier and more effective to lay a basic covering than attempt to treat the concrete.

  10. If money were no object then i'd love soe racedeck flooring:

But maybe some checkered lino would do. B&M sell it really cheap, plus as its just a small garage 8.5ft x 18.5ft i could get an offcut.
My local carpet place does aluminium checkerplate look lino too.

  11. pva / water mix on mine, then some proper floor paint over the top, luckily got it for free left over from one of swmbo's construction projects.

.. although i'd love to get those tiles ^ :)

  12. Carpet a good shag pile or grey office carpet a few scatter cushions..

laying under the bus would be a pleasure...:hattip:

soon as you jack something on lino it is going to tear...

  13. PVA all the way .50.50 and 2 maybe 3 coats would do it

  14. Does it need to be waterproof pva though?

  15. Good point.

But will painted / pva'd dusty concrete be any better I wonder? I reckon it'll chip if subjected to abuse. Although what do I know? Probably depends how good/bad the surface is in the first place.

I like the hardboard in the workshop because I don't care about it. It absorbs spills nicely too, so I don't have to bother cleaning it. :D

Mmmm shag pile. My uncle has a carpeted (and heated) garage. It's really nice.

  16. The other good thing with carpet is it stops tiny screws, ball bearings etc from rolling too far off. Much better for not losing bits. And nice for dropping stuff on to too. Stuff might get buried in a deep shag pile though.

  18. Plate it with e-less nickel sheet. This gives a near mirror 80% reflectivity and stays shiny for years.

Then you will be able to closely watch the rust developing under your bus, without having to be a yoga expert.
(Just don't wear your skirt in the garage!).

Mines 3/4 carpet. We have just moved here,so we had a few rugs from our old house.I left a quarter of the garage floor near the door bare.Good space for a bit of welding, spraying, somewhere where you dont want to ruin your 'Wilton'...;)

  20. I went with a coat of 50:50 pva then 2 coats of garage floor paint from B&Q. Seems to hold up well.
