  1. Thank You Kind Sir.

  2. TSR used to put the radiator in the engine bay and often had overheating problems as a result. Not sure if they still do. However, as Poptop2 says, Fellows put theirs underneath between the chassis rails with a scoop to force air through it. It's quite effective.

I've often wondered why Vw don't make a modern upgraded aircooled engine, made to modern standards that would just slot into our old buses, surely there's enough call for it

I guess the development costs would run into hundreds of millions which would never be recouped?
No doubt if they'd thought it was profitable they'd have done it.

But it's people like us who keep these vehicles on the road that gives Vw it's heritage, they always advertise this for their new models, their still cool because of us

Maybe. They don't want to stake their reputation on 60 year old technology though.

  7. Each to there own as its been said I got my wires crossed in my last post I so t want to spend loads at the min and like my 1641 I will run it once Ive fully built the van and see how it goes

  8. So which is the best? a scoop or forward facing vents, its something i will have to sort out at a later date

  9. although i started this thread i have a newly built engine [see below] and hope to run it with this,
then review it when a scooby comes along, there are so many cheap uns about, and the 2l non turbo will push a bus along nicely...

    Fellows use a scoop.
    Works well by all accounts.

  12. That's a bit of a beast.

  13. interesting to see how they get the fans on the rad,
i saw the mock up at stanford and wondered if fans would fit...

  15. Mine came with a beetle so I thought I'd keep hold of it as the camper engine needed a rebuild , when the bus did run I drove it abit and I was surprised at just how well it moved the old girl then to find out it weren't running right anyway but still moved well so hopefully I've sorted that and it's fine once it's back on the road plus I miss that air cooled sound

  16. Fellows started out doing these conversions for themselves. Dave has been driving around for years with the same configuration of cooling on his van, and so it's been well tested. The radiator in the engine bay causes problems not only for cooling, but also blocks access to the engine from the rear engine hatch, so if you don't have the type 4 engine top hatch in your engine bay, you're screwed.

    That's a monster!!

I think most people shy away from the Turbo simply because you have an additional and substantial set of challenges - oil cooling for the turbo itself, the turbo and exhaust running very hot and then of course how to cool the air that the turbo has charged up.

Good for a drag car - not so good for a road car.

Regarding cooling - I've had no issues with mine thus far - that centre rad is very big in terms of surface area, far larger than the original cars.

    In answer to

1 - i don't but i suppose those with blueray players use the option because they can !

2 - later Victorian houses had electricity in the day ( you should have gone with Georgian houses )

3 " recycling " plenty have been made into cans by now , i wonder how many cans have become Braziliant bays ?

4 - crossplys i don't think they were fitted on bays from new only put on later by owners . " 4 star" no longer easily available thank god , otherwise some dopes would still be using it , breathe in that lead man .

5 . Toyota /VW - Your old man knew his stuff and influenced your upbringing correctly , well done that chap .

6 - No one is dictating to you , just disagreeing with your engine choice for a vw ( i'm not btw ) but they are entitled to imo .

Other than that i have nothing to say but - RACE !
