  2. What sort of mileage motor did you fit and what sort of mileage have you done. Has it been reliable?

The engine had done 83,000 when i fitted it and had an mot at the end of April and have done over 60,000 since i did the conversion, but i do use it every day. I changed the water pump and cam belt and full service when fitted, and changed the oil and filter every 6000 to 8000 miles. I have an after market K&N style air filter which i clean when i do an oil change. And its been reliable and not had a problem so far. I do expect at some point something may wear out but i have had good usage out of it.

The only thing I would say is that i started with a kennedy conversion plate and flywheel similar to the Fellows set up but it uses a high performance clutch the the missis didnt like as it was very heavy in town. But we changed it to an RJES bell housing and use a subaru clutch, flywheel and starter motor which is alot bigger and lighter and lighter and with the torque when parking you can just let the clutch out gently no throttle needed. If you do alot of miles i really do think its something worth looking at.

But its not just subaru engines there are so many modern engines that can be fitted and give similar results. I have a friend with a 1.8 20v turbo from a passat and his is so easy to drive as well. And its all vag parts with few exceptions like the exhaust. I think if you can get something that will give you 100bhp plus that you dont need to rev the bits off and has electronic injection and ignition timing then you are on a winner.

  5. I know where there a 68 that was butchered for a V-tect swap {the guy gave up & sold the engine & trans} would I have to build a 'sub' frame like in this picture? good running Subarus are pretty cheap here,I've been think about this since the 68 is totally chopped up (they cut part of the main frame out) so what do you use from the subby?engine -trans,wiring? subby.jpg

From what I can see on mine they pretty much leave the chassis as is - there is a section cut out and a new section with a round hole welded in to let one of the water pipes to the radiator in - other than that the mount for the oil bath was removed.

I think the cradle for the engine picks up on where the original fits (will confirm this later) - other than that I think any changes to the original vehicle are negligible.

From the subaru they use the ECU and harness and the ignition barrel. You can use the subaru transmission (with a conversion kit), but most pick up on the original VW item.

  8. Ultimately its your bus your money your decision, but i would take the money to John Maher Racing and get him to build you a fully blueprinted ,balanced ,dyno tested engine.I am lucky enough to have one in mine,20,000 miles later its still reliable, runs cool, sounds fab, pulls like a train ,125 bhp and about 25 to the gallon on a run .but when you speak to him he will build a engine suitable for your needs .

  9. that frame in the pic is a mock up [made of wood]of the t2 chassis

the scooby will fit fairly easily, you need a bell housing, cooling and the loom sorting

  10. i dont like those glass filters they can come apart, its not a good place to have it...

  11. I agree, its now been moved up by the tank with a metal canister type.Great minds think alike

There's no denying they're lovely engines but its not really comparable to a 160+ bhp engine that'll do easily in excess of 30mpg even if you have a bit of fun driving it.
Once again, you pays your money you makes your choice etc and each to their own.

Nice looking mill - can I ask what that might cost from a drive in drive out perspective?

Also, have you had to have it retuned since the installation (by way of maintenance), or is it back to a standard service schedule?

  15. He builds them to your requirments have a look at his website its really informative. All his engines use full flow oil systems with a fram hp1 filter so maintanece schedules are about every 5000 miles thats when i give mine a tinker with.Price wise your looking at £4500 minimum.Give him a call as he is very helpfull

  16. Where do folks place the 'cooling' radiator  in front like the Brazlinans?

No - underslung rad fitted flush inside the crossmember in front of gear box with scoop vents slightly angled down to catch air !
