Rusty jacking points and bent sil - MOT failure?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Floki, Mar 10, 2016.

  1. Can I just say please don't let this turn into a *******ing contest as there is plenty of that already
If we can discuss and learn from each other then more dubs and other classics will stay on the road

My wife tells me something about 50 shades of grey and that's an mot

  3. its good to fight lol if these things are not asked then no one will no , in southern ireland pre 1980 vehicles are nct ie mot exempt , which in my mind is wrong , because at least with a current mot some level of ,work is in order,. and safer for the classic car van member ,

  4. Im not fighting, just stating fact. It sounds like we are talking about two very different tests and is pointless trying to compare...

I wouldn't appreciate a rusty jacking point if I was an AA man under your van on the side of the road.
Your van needs to be safe.

    Fix it.

  8. Thanks that is a very kind offer. I'm hopeful it will just pass it's mot as it is, which will then give me a chance to sort out a few other bits. I'll get some better pictures when I'm next home and then see what you think. I'm worried that welding new jacking point (s) may damage the bodywork and paint above, so may just go for getting them removed for now. Thanks again

I'm pretty sure this is the jacking point that was described as mot advisory light corrosion

  9. Just back from being MOT'd. It passed no problems. On closer inspection the jacking points all look fine, except the one in the picture above which has some light corrosion.

The MOT man asked me if my van was imported as he said it was very solid and original. It's a UK van owned by me for 19 years, fully restored in 2002, well wax oiled/under sealed and garaged when not in use. At least I can carry on planning my trip to Islay now, without worrying about jacking points that I don't even use!

I now have until April 2017, to sort out a few bits of possible welding.
