Playing about getting pumped up for some bigger bodywork later. To get myself in the mood I’m starting with some easy stuff - the rear vents.

anyone recommend a tool type for this light rust, but quite detailed area. Don’t feel as if I’m doing my best with wet and dry paper. Would be good if the same tool could also do the seams later on — so it’s grooves, corners rather than large flat areas

A dremelly type thing with wire brushes and sanding paper drums would work.

Yep, I’d have thought a dremmel would be ideal.

  6. Yep, Dremel with small wire brushes. Good for cleaning carbs as well.

Yes, I've got a couple of cheap imitations which work perfectly well. The wire brushes don't last long, nor do the sanding drums so get plenty! The abrasive stones are ok if you've got a bit of rust to shift. Wear eye protection!

  10. Get in eBay and buy a job lot of small stainless wire wheels. Perfect for brushing your crevices. BBC

Presume these attachments fit the Dremmell?

The only thing I'd say about buying a dremel is to go for a mains powered one over a battery one.

I'm not sure if I've just been unlucky/careless but I've had two of the battery operated ones which I can no longer use as the chargers don't work.
The first one sparked as I plugged the battery into the charger and died (charger was turned on at the time, not sure if they don't like being on when plugging the battery in).
The second I dropped the charger onto the floor and it stopped working (not a massive drop but enough to kill it apparently).

I've recently bought a mains one which worked out cheaper.

  13. The ones I got do. Not much for a bag of 20, round, pointy and cup brushes.

  14. And if you’re using the flexible drive read the instructions and fit it right otherwise it will tie itself in a knot and destroy itself.

  15. Yep, mains is better. Only thing to watch is overloading them. You can easily burn the armature out, as they don’t seem to be protected against overloads.

  16. My Dremel flexi went a bit berserk while I cutting stuff under the van. It was like wrestling an angry snake...

  19. I’ll be tackling the vents with this setup:
A piece of plastic conduit, with a slot cut through, goes over the flexi extension. Allows a longer reach but also application of pressure.

Selection of these should do the trick.

Taking the rear light housing off allows quite a far reach up within the vent.

    Good idea!
Access will be easier if you remove the Earz and throw them in the bin! :D
