Roof Restoration

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by Yellow Harv, Aug 1, 2016.

  1. Hey, we currently have a high top on our 79 Viking that we want to remove and replace with a viking roof. We have the original roof but we're looking for anyone that is in the north of the country that you would recommend for restoration of the roof and canvas? Alternatively has anyone restored themselves and if so any tips or things to look out for? Any help would be much appreciated!

  2. Hi I used a company in Bristol for the new roof canvas on my super Viking the do mail order as well , Kingswood canvas. I originally was going to get it repaired but it worked out cheaper for a new one, £190. When removing the old one take plenty of photos and you will need plenty of blind rivets to hold the plastic trim which holds the roof canvas down.

  3. Hey,

    Hope all is going well!

I've not had mine done yet but I've been recommended

    http://www.proudtopop.co.uk/

They have all sorts of replacement canvasses and offer a fitting service as well as a restoration.

I have a full length Moonraker and the replacement price seem very reasonable. Haven't been quoted for anything else from them though.

    Hope this helps,

    John

  4. Wow really? £190 for a full new Viking canvas?
    Good quality?
    Got any pics?

I used a Bristol based sail maker to do my canvas. If you've got an old one for them to use as a template, it works out much cheaper than using a "normal" supplier.

  6. If that up there ^ is like for like (Viking is awkward shape with "windiws " in one panel) then £190 is amazing !

  7. If you google Viking roof on images, kingswood canvas roof on a type 25 , the roof material is light grey, a lot lighter than the mustard yellow standard one, they fit 2 Windows plus larger roof vents and on the super Viking a rain deflecter on the bottom edge of the slide out,

  8. Thanks for the tips everyone! Having had a good look at everything on one of these nice sunny days we've had I'm likely to need some welding doing with the gutters which is annoying! I think because of that the DIY restoration might be a step too far. Will have a look at Kingswood though as £190 is cheap!

  9. It looks like we've got matching vans! Although yours works and looks in better shape (like mine used to be). Mine's July 1979, same colour, same interior, same Sheldon high-top.

I'm about to start a restoration and was hoping to remove the high-top. I didn't think I'd be able to get hold of a Viking roof, so was looking at repro-Westfalia roofs. Where did you get your original Viking roof? And I'd love to hear how you get on with removing the current roof. I've been looking at mine trying to figure out where to start, and it's the first thing I'll need to do to get it into my garage. Have you removed yours already? Any tips?

    Here's a restoration thread I've just started:
