rollover or not

  1. Hi folks, first post on here, fairly new to bay ownership i bought a 1972 tintop around a year ago, havent done much to it up till this point, now ive started to pick away at the rust bits that need done.
first thoughts were probably the same as many, couple bits to address then get it back on the road, closer inspection needs more than i would have first wanted but dont they all haha,

basically i am needing to do some work underside, hopefully not too much welding but definatly alot of cleaning up for re undersealing the van,
is the easiest way to go to get a rollover jig to do the works or are there other ways to safely lift the van to work on the underside,
i do need to do alot of lower panel work so guessing a rollover would be handier for panel work aswell,

so for those of you who done it without a rollover what ways have you done it and those who have would you say it is a worthwhile purchase, it would be the rotisserie style rollover

Two choices. Roll over thing or lie on the floor. It's that simple.

To roll it over needs a fair bit of emptying all the fluids out etc.

Hi @joshoconnor1 best thing i bought was the rotisserie, allowed me to do a proper clean up of the underside and if youve got welding to do underside makes it so much easier, mine is currently out on free loan. Good luck with the restoration.

  4. I wouldn't bother unless you've got lots of welding underneath to do. Just bite the bullet and have a couple of days under the bus scraping and wire wheeling the old underseal off.

  5. Cheers guys, I definitely need to do sill work but majority of underside looks okay just needs a good clean up and re undersealed

Sills are mostly not underneath, ive done lots on axle and one on a rotisserie, whatever position it’s in something will be less accessible, you need a big place and lots of height to roll a van, I wouldn’t bother with a rotisserie personally

I never did either and I doubt @Dubs has one. But did/do any of us do the "eat your dinner off it" underside job? Not me. No thanks. Well I did just the once and never again...

  8. They’re ok but you usually have to do welding front and rear before you trust the bumper mounts to hold the weight. Needs to be pretty much a bare shell, you’re putting a lot of trust in 2 12mm bolts!

I have used one for years now, and swear by it! Obvs it's only used for full on restos as the bus needs to properly stripped down to a shell.

For sills I just use axle stands, or maybe my shiney New 2 poster lift. :D

I would use one of those cheap ones , the one I had was about £1500, it’s a big chunk out of a budget too

  12. Cheers guys, thanks for the replies,,
It was mostly for making underside work easier, the full interior is stripped out all glass and doors at the moment, still to drop the engine for an overhaul so I think il get under with axle stands and see how I get on, cheers

It is possible to go for the eatyourdinneroffit standard without a rollover, but would I do it again? Not a flippin chance. Took months!
