Rock n Roll bed.

  1. We're just back from our first weeks camping in what feels like years.

    I can confirm that the RnR bed needs attention. It's the stock Devon 3/4 thing with a white painted steel frame & sheets of mdf or similar. It's covered with foam cushions which suddenly feel very thin, these were refilled some years ago & aren't the forty year old originals!
    Questions;
    Will I gain anything from replacing the original mechanism with a Rusty Lee or similar newer version?
    Can I buy a RnR with a sprung steel mesh onto which I can place my cushions directly for a bit more spring?
    Given that I'll be replacing the filling, can anyone recommend which type to go for?
    At the moment I'm thinking V38 high density foam with a bonded memory foam topping - good or bad idea?

    As always, thanks in anticipation for any response.

    I'll bet Keith across at Kens Customs will know the answer!

    Rusty Lee seems to be the bed of choice these days.

    As an "Osteo" I would say the firm-base-plus-memoryfoam-top is a good way to go.

    As a cheapskate I can recommend (after you've looked at prices of various foams) a visit to your nearest IKEA "Circular Hub" formerly known as "bargain corner" ... With a bit of careful measurement, and some prodding about under the covers :eek: you may well find a choice piece of memory foam to convert from "mattress topper" to your top layer .... and save yourself a chunk of your ill gotten gains in the process.
    This is topical for me as yesterday I bought a "standard double" (200/135/5.5cm) mattress topper for £39 instead of £99 just because the cover had got a bit dirty (came out in a wash) :thinking:

    Also, the Volkswares R&R that I just bought second hand in case it would work in a Merc Viano (it wouldn't) is a metal frame with mesh, looks to be well put together, is an easy mechanism to use, and has very good videos on their website for assembly ... Mine is already spoken for btw, and is full width, so this isn't the big sell!

  4. That's the fella I was after.

    We already use a separate topper, more to keep the cushions together & in the right place than anything. A bonded combination foam velcro'd to the sprung frame is looking favourite at the mo, but any other suggestions are more than welcome.

    My R&R is an early Rusty Lee one.
    It's got 4" medium foam bonded to a ply base...the upholstery wouldn't let me waste my money on a layer of memory foam ( despite selling it).
    Most comfortable bed I possess!
