Road Trip - Let's Dance

Discussion in 'Holidays, Trips & Campsites' started by Barry76, Sep 2, 2024.

  1. My wife has always wanted to go to Carinda. She's a big David Bowie fan and that is where they filmed Let's Dance.
It is a town of about 150 people and located 650km north west of Sydney.

So we decided to have a bit of a road trip and head off to Lightning Ridge which is another 100km further north
Unfortunately the Carinda has seen better days than when it was being filmed in the early 80's

Had to contend with a bit of traffic to get there though

    Emus everywhere

Great pictures, keep them coming, it's fascinating to see the real Australia rather than the movie version.....however, how about a Priscilla, Queen of the desert version ;)

  3. We headed up to Lightning Ridge after that.

    That's a whole different world

More emus and roos but also a whole heap of wild goats

From there we headed to Grawin - about 75km west.

    Roads were not the best

Trying to set up a tent was a whole new experience

  4. The pub was called the Glengarry Hilton.

    It was no "tourist pub"
This is where the opal miners drank.
Friendly enough - but you didnt ask what their name was.
    This is one guys house

The miner's dogs would have eaten a wild boar for breakfast

  7. After that, we slowly headed back to Sydney.
We have recently retired, so this was a bit of an exploratory for finding some pubs with free camps and good food and cold beer.

    We found quite a few

Sadly, the pubs in broken Hill are not what they use to be.
Tourism has taken it's toll and most are up market now with bus loads travelling through
You can see in the picture that it mostly shops on the street level.
There was a small bar on the left with an open widow you could sit at.
But no seats out side - everyone wants air conditioning comfort.

Give me a street seat where I can watch the life anyday

75km away is a town called Silverton.
The pub there is still a cracka - where they filmed the first Mad Max

That's the trouble with tourism, it can destroy the thing that attracted them there in the first place. Great pictures and I'm not jealous at all !!!!

Fantastic pics. Did you have to break out the jackhammers to get the pegs in for that tent ? I could just about feel the places through your pictures there, the very deep blue of the sky’s is probably part of Dorothy Mckellar’s inspiration for sure. Looks like you had a bit of a problem with being able to park in most places.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, I love a sunburnt country

Although I’ve not really needed it, I’ve chucked in the Milwaukee impact and that’ll do for wheel changes too. With a 10mm socket, ive gone for the screw in threaded tent pegs . These will get into anything rugged, like dried out stuff and tarmac , doubt if it’ll touch concrete though. Great thing is, they’re very easy in to the ground and very easy out again which is also a bonus. I use it anyway just to show off, gets round rocks too.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, But you got sunshine :)

I took screw in pegs and normal. The ground was just too hard and the rocks under ground too large for the screw in’s.

Drill a guide hole and just try your best to bang a peg in.
There was no wind so pegs didn’t have much stress on them
