Okay so I guess you'r reading this because you either have a restoration project, are considering a restoration project or just have a small job you are considering tackling yourself on your late bay. In which case I thought a few pointers re the restoration section may be in order.

Have a good read through. there are some fantastic resto's going on and some really good work that is well photographed. Some of it may seem beyond your capability's and some may seem easy. It is all perspective really, if your job is a big one and you feel capable then it won't seem so daunting. If on the other hand your job is small and you don't feel capable then, it may seem more daunting. fear not, help in all shapes and forms are available within these pages.

The things to remember when reading through the resto pages are, everyone started somewhere, some people appear to have a natural bent towards metal work/mechanics etc and some initially find it a struggle . I suggest you persevere and when in doubt - ask questions. The work done on these pages is done by home mechanics who are usually self taught, they have a love for their work that you will rarely find down your local garage, and they will be only too pleased to share their knowledge. I would suggest you are well mannered and polite when requesting advice.

The SMG thing is a group set up by Dale @Diddymen ( link needed mate ) while he did his own superb restoration ( is it finished yet?) It simply stands for ' static motion group' meaning -- your van isn't going anywhere atm, and until it's done you are still in. The group is a fab support to anyone in need of advice, If you are doing a resto, get yourself in it and the resto may not seem so lonely. We all know a garage can be a lonely place!

People can help re - tool purchase advice, panel purchase advice. measurements, weights, heights, divorce lawyers, neighbour disputes, star wars, star trek and almost anything else in the universe. We know everything!

In short, read enjoy, contribute. it helps everyone to have a bit of support and positive feedback for their labours. It also helps to know you are not alone. And don't forget to comment if you see something really good or you would like to know how they did it.. If you don't ask you won't know!

You might want to start your own resto thread too.

  2. great post as always :)

...dont forget, its not just to comment if you see something good, comment if you see some one getting stuck or needing advice

...I've been looking for a link ever since you mentioned it in your new resto thread .....but I think it got lost in the great TLB V2 crash!!

    but I've found these....

    http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/merry-christmas-from-the-smg.19135/#post-308828

    http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/goodbye-diddymen.7157/#post-121897 .....welcome back BTW ;)

so I think this will have to be the new one :)

    ....so to recap

    rules for the TLB SMG

    1) You must obey the hierachy of waving ;):-

Spitty owners shalt ownly wave to other splitty owners
prototype bay owners shalt only wave to other early bays and splitties (splitties wont wave back)
Late bay and cross over owners wave at every one (splitty owners and prototype bay owners wont wave back)
T25's, T4's & T5's are a law unto them selves when observing the waving rule :D
Those, whos bus doth not move must under no circumstances wave to any moving VW while sitting in their static vehicle (they may wave at other static restorations while they sit in their cab moving the wheel and making brum brum noises only) :D

    2) You must own a very (or partly rusty) bus, which is either under restoration ....or just doesnt work

    3) you must start and maintain a restoration thread with copious amounts of photographs

    4) (you do not have to do the work your self)

    5) you must talk to any one as often as possible about your restoration ....whether they are listening or not

    6) you must be mad?!

    7) you must never send a VW to the scrap yard in the sky (see @womball fine example )

    8) you must prey to the god's of Wolfsburg that your bus will one day be finished, that repro parts will one day be made to fit, and that the scene tax will one day be stopped on restoration parts.

    9) Dont rant or bitch on others restoration threads, by all means if you see something dangerous - say something ....but do it consideratly, with good reason, and dont demorallise the restorer

    10) the 10th and final comandment, you must accept that the founding members of the TLB SMG (cant remember off the top of my head but I think they were @MorkC68 @dog (lifetime member ;)) @poptop2) are free to make more commandments as they see fit :p

dont forget, anyone can get their official SMG clothing at the TLB merchandise shop

  7. After reading your resto I second your application :beer:

Welcome along for the ride tbr

But your restored is going a bit fast, you obviously weren't aware of commandment 11 -

    11) take things slow, don't rush your restoration' savour it ... after all these busses went the fastest or most comfortable things to drive ....apparently :D

  9. I have never come across such a lovely bunch of well informed people and I am proud to be a member of TLB. I have taken three years to almost complete my resto, do I qualify even if I am no longer static??
