Replacement Gearbox

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by simon, Sep 2, 2021.

  1. So I'm in need of a replacement gearbox, has anybody got any recommendations for replacement or repair, mine is fitted to a 1600 T1 engine. Is there any upgrades worth doing as I maybe changing the engine to 1776 in the next couple of years.

  2. Obvious Q: what's the matter with the old one ;)?

A boggo CE box with a 200mm clutch works just fine with a 1776, in my experience.

  3. Gearbox is very noisy in 2nd & jumps out of first every now and again.

  6. I've got a noisy 3 rib from the off if it's any good for bits. Did @mikedjames maybe need a bit ? Has play in the drive shaft flanges or whatever they are called.

  7. I think that was just an age thing.

Amazing! I've said it before but I can't believe you still have this. I'd snap it up for spare if I had somewhere to store it!

Wasn’t that long ago that there were a constant stream of people looking for 6 rib boxes!

And as soon as Paul sells this, that will no doubt resume!

he charges £750 for the full rebuild apparently that’s blasted and painted.. but a 5 week turn around.

  17. Really? That sounds extremely cheap. Do you just get it painted for that?

  18. Bears charge £200, just to tell what's wrong, I've been advised that's its going to be around £800 to fix mine.

  19. Christ, i’m In wrong business! ‘It’s your pinion shaft bearing. That’ll be £200 please’
The chap I use used to do all of Heritage’s gearboxes until he retired. Now he does it for a bit of spare cash in his garden shed. £450. He’s near Chichester if anyone’s interested.

How are you in the wrong business?
Investment in the correct tools to strip it without damage.
Knowledge to strip it without damage.

A mornings worth of cleaning all the crap off the components bathing in Marmitee chemicals.

Knowledge and experience to know what requires replacing and what doesn't.
    Writing an assessment report.

A day and a half to 2 days work, and that's before the cost of parts and assuming it comes apart without issue...and they don't always!
    Then the rebuild....
Btw, a pinion bearing, correct one not a cheese replacement, is around 90. Replacing it requires a full strip down...;).
Oh, then there's hours of consultation usually when customers get in from work because the bus is their hobby, plus warranty support.
Peeps are happy to spend hundreds on exhausts or shiny bolt on accessories.
Gearbox rebuilds, done properly, are cheap!:)
